Hexham is the administrative centre for the Tynedale district, although in terms of population, Prudhoe is now Tynedale's largest town.
Hexham is part of the parliamentary constituency of Hexham.

There are many smaller towns and villages that surround Hexham, such as Corbridge, Riding Mill, Stocksfield, Prudhoe and Wylam to the east with Haydon Bridge and Bardon Mill to the west.
Hexham is home to rock and roll outfit, Peace Burial At Sea.
The town is the birthplace of Pete Doherty, formerly of rock band The Libertines, and Andy Duncan captain of Cambridge United F.C. Hexham won the Town award in the 2005 Britain in Bloom awards.

The boundary between my constituency and his passes through the Cheviot hills—one of the most drastically affected upland areas—and the problems that he described are ones that I, too, have experienced.
It might be hard to find our constituency boundary in that vast and largely empty territory if it were not for the small number of people who maintain the hills in the form that tourists want to see.
By way of background, since the general election was called, in my constituency and the immediate neighbouring constituencies, mainly in the Ribble valley in Lancashire, we are approaching 100 outbreaks of foot and mouth disease, 400 farms culled as contiguous premises and 300,000 animals slaughtered.

Following the attempted arson attack at the Hexham police station and recent reports that Hexham based police officers were being re-directed to other parts of Northumberland to deal with crimes in other towns, such as Ashington, local Councillor Derek Kennedy has hit out.
Councillor Kennedy proposed a motion "That this Council writes to the Northumberland Police and request that the decision to send Hexham based officers to other towns is reconsidered." The Liberal Democrats supported the motion, however the Conservatives disagreed and block-voted against, resulting in the motion failing.
It is a Liberal Democrat national policy to fund a further 10,000 police officers and 20,000 Community Support Officers to improve the visibility and the effectiveness of the UK Police force.

I was, very briefly, on Tynedale Council, stood for election for the Hexham Constituency in the 1997 General Election, and was, again rather briefly, involved with the ‘Friends of Haydon Bridge’ and the Haydon News during Mitch’s period as Editor.
Many years ago I had the occasion to visit the old work house in Hexham, now part of the hospital, and as I walked in tramps were sitting on a bench resting before going on to Prudhoe workhouse.
A Hexham charity shop, working flat out to raise money for the Mozambique flood victims, urgently needs new volunteers so that it can extend its opening hours.
