Heydar Aliyev has lately attempted to obscure the elementary facts of his early life - a daunting task given the enormous documentation which accompanies anyone who reaches the higher echelons of power, to say nothing of the object of a cult of personality.
Aliyev later claimed that he took a leave of absence from the secret police to attend Baku University in the late 1940s - a fairly typical occurrence, as even Beria attempted to leave the CheKa to study architecture before he rose to prominence in the purges.
Aliyev had found generous patrons in Kremlin insiders named Leonid Brezhnev, soon to become leader of the USSR, and Yuri Andropov, head of the KGB, and he jumped in the saddle and rode their starched coattails to greater pastures.
