 Latino Review
The horror films that have been released do not give me that feeling that I had watching the films of the 80’s horror heyday.
The films run the gamut from being really bland, (The Urban Legend Films, Valentine, They) being too self aware, (Scream 2 and 3) a joke, (Jason X) or are disgustingly overrated to the point that the fan worship grates your nerves, (You hear that Blair Witch Project and 28 Day’s Later?)
While the respect for the horror genre is apparent throughout the film, the execution sadly falls short.

The two previous films, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone/Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), were enormous worldwide hits.
In the others films, Chris Columbus's direction was bland, sentimental and mawkish, substituting cliché emotional cues for any real drama, and with a complete lack of wonder.
He is considered a murderer, a disciple of Lord Voldemort, the photos of him circulating show him as a screaming madman, he has the whole magic world in a panicked uproar at his escape, even manages to scare one of the ghosts in the paintings (an amusing cameo from Dawn French) into hiding.

And while it was a parody of the heyday horror films he grew up on, his choice of B&W forced his audiences to associate with the films and ideas he was referencing.
And while it may not be targeted for a large portion of viewers, this is a film that all should see, especially considering how television media coverage has exploded into reality voyeurism, sensationalism, and professional prostitution.
The film successfully portrays the consequence of the era, as well as the integrity and vision of the newsmakers.

This wizard academy plays host to all the mysterious and fun escapades remaining in the film: from "potions class" with fl-pot brews set neatly atop rows of Bunsen burners to "broom-flight class" where things get a bit out of control with these underage-flyers.
Perhaps I expected zappier streams of wand light as jolted earlier on in the film: 1) The aunt's pompous little speech about Harry's mother, "Oh, we have a witch in the family - isn't that wonderful!" she quotes with a sharply comedic mixture of sarcasm and disdain.
Though intended to be "hyper-real," the film still tried my patience during a few ridiculous circumstances, for which I'll bet pre-pubescent viewer imagination would be more than happy to fill in these holes of rationality with goblins, spells, and mystery.
