n March 2003 the tiny township of Heyfield in Gippsland (Victoria) Australia is set to host one of the largest events ever seen in the area.
Heyfield (population 1,600) is expecting an influx of approximately 30,000 visitors, including hundreds travelling from England, Europe, New Zealand and United States.
Volunteers from the Heyfield and District Vintage Machinery Group recently finished building a shed on the Gordon Street Reserve to house the flsmiths' forge.

I had never riden Heyfield before, much less an area that has been destroyed by bushfire so I was keen as mustard to get out there and have a crack.
Heyfield is around 2.5 to 3hrs from home so I was up and ready to go by 6:30.
Now I don't know if it is always like this in Heyfield but the washouts were huge and great fun.

Leave your vehicle at Rotary Park in Heyfield and cycle north on Licola Rd, turning left in to Firebrace Rd. Passing several of the timber mills that make Heyfield a timber town, turn left at the next roundabout and a big dutch windmill.
A coffee at the Art Space or a meal and drink at the shop or hotel will refresh you before leaving town to the West on the Traralgon Rd and travelling the 10km to the Cowwarr Weir.
Return via Cowwarr turning left in to Rices Lane, travelling through dairyfarms and grazing country, following this road to the outskirts of Heyfield to end your journey.

POLICE have launched an appeal to find two teenagers seen near a blaze that led to the death of a man near Heyfield in Victoria's south east, as 16 homes are confirmed destroyed in bushfires.
Yesterday the fires claimed their first victim, when 48-year-old Longford man, Donald Dosser who had been fighting a fire started by an arsonist died near Heyfield when he fell from the back of a trailer and was run over by a truck travelling behind.
A strong south-westerly wind pushed the fire to the towns of Cowwarr Weir, Toongabbie and Seaton, on the outskirts of Heyfield.

A man believed to be helping fight bushfires has died and at least nine homes have been lost as blazes rage out of control across Victoria.
Rural Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the man fell off the back of a trailer west of Heyfield in Gippsland and was run over by a vehicle following behind.
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) earlier said a number of properties in the Heyfield area had been lost to the fire in the Gippsland communities of Toongabbie, Cowwarr and Seaton.

The Victorian Farmers Federation held meetings in Gippsland this week to gather information for its submission to the Parliamentary Bushfire Enquiry.
Mr Esplin faced most of the questions at Heyfield and some hostility from the audience about the amount of fuel reduction burn done in Autumn or Spring still not reaching the level that land holders would like to see.
Bruce Esplin said that while the frustration was warranted there is movement towards greater fuel reduction work as well as more resourcing of relevant departments concerning land management.
