Like thousands of other peasant farmers in Hhohho, a woman who identifies herself only as Khanyesile ekes out a living from 30 limp marijuana plants hidden in thick undergrowth behind her rickety shack.

In Hhohho, HIV prevalence among male STD clinic patients tested increased from 10 percent in 1992 to 53 percent in 1998.
Among female patients in Hhohho, HIV prevalence rose from 11 percent in 1992 to 47 percent in 1998.

The Swaziland Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse estimates that 75 percent of small-landholder farmers in Hhohho's isolated mountain valleys grow marijuana.
But with the construction of Maguga Dam on the Komati River, which spurred the development of the Hhohho Region road system, once isolated farms are more accessible.
