The Martialist: The Magazine For Those Who Fight Unfairly
Marketed by MKS Supply, the Hi Point family of firearms has been a fixture in the "gun culture" for a while now.
The magazine supplied with the carbine was nice and smooth, but a couple of the spares I picked up were extremely stiff and I had to white-knuckle them to get the rounds in.
Each time, thanks to the light weight of the carbine, I lost the second shot, as the barrel rose a lot more than you'd expect from a 9mm carbine.

Hi-Point 995 Carbine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is worth noting that the Hi-point carbine is sometimes incorrectly referred to as an assault rifle, in fact it is just a semiautomatic pistol caliber carbine.
Some 28,000 were made and sold just in 1998, and there are reports that it sold very well as part of the preparations some people made for the societal upheaval anticipated as a result of the Year 2000 problem.
A weapon of this type was used by one of the Columbine murderers after he acquired it through an illegal straw purchase at a gun show.

Additionally many stock and aftermarket options are available, more so with the carbine, and magazines are swapable between handguns and carbines (a rarity in firearms).
They are generally available in 8 to 10 round capacities for pistols and 10 rounds for rifles; however, a 15-round aftermarket magazine exists for the 9 mm carbine.

At this point, a link pivots the barrel down, out of locking recesses in the slide, and brings the barrel to a stop.
As the slide continues rearward, a claw extractor pulls the spent casing from the firing chamber and an ejector strikes the rear of the case pivoting it out and away from the pistol.
Interestingly enough, many early depictions in movies and TV utilized the Spanish Star 9mm variant since an effective.45 ACP blank that could operate the action were hard to come by.

I was looking for a companion 9mm Carbine to my Sig239 pistol and purchased a Hi Point 995 new for $159.00 after reading the Gun Test article.
But considering the low price paid for the Hi Point, the accuracy seems to be better with it.
The Marlin is obviously a nicer gun as far as looks--nice wood stock and all--but from what I have seen the Hi points seem to stack up favorably as far as reliability and accuracy.
