Lois says it is her "special blend," but then launches into a guilt-infused internal monologue: "...of six different nearly empty bags of coffee I found in the back of a cabinet!"

Hi and Lois is a comic strip about a suburban family.
Hiram ("Hi") and Lois Flagston are typical American suburbanites.
Today many consider Hi and Lois to be rather dated, although it has made some efforts to keep up with the times, such as housewife Lois Flagston taking up a career in real estate in 1980.

It wasn't political correctness run amok, but the authors of the "Hi and Lois" comic strip were skittish that the offering planned for tomorrow might be objectionable to some readers.
The original strip showed Hi and Lois lamenting the winter weather, the cold temperatures and piles of snow on the ground.
Lois responds: "Careful what you wish for!" and the frame depicts an image of the family atop the roof of their house that's adrift at sea in the middle of a tropical storm.

The National Cartoonists' Society awarded him plaques for "Best Humor Strip" in 1959, 1960 and 1972; and in 1962, conferred upon him its highest honor — the Reuben Award, given to the outstanding cartoonist of the year.

The prose of both of his comic strips offered a light humor bordering on whimsy, and was always focused on a punch line instead of story continuity.
In fact, Hi and Lois and Hagar were character driven in both word and art, which is a trademark of all successful literature.
