	Brown County, Part 8
		JOHN MAGLOTT, farmer, Section 33, P. Hiawatha, was born near the city of Worms, in the village of Heppenheim on the Rhine, December 27, 1820.
		Maglott was one of the earliest settlers in Hiawatha Township, and while Kansas was yet a Territory he served one term as Justice of the Peace.
		In 1882 he gave the city of Hiawatha a Public Library, the books and treasures of which are open for the free use of all the people of the county.

		Although most Iroquois reserves are in southern Ontario and Quebec, one small group (Michel's band) settled in Alberta during the 1800s as part of the fur trade.
		Ontario has 4,600 Oneida split between the 2,800 Oneida of the Thames near London and the Grand River Reserve with the Six Nations.
		Almost 12,000 Mohawk live in Ontario as Six Nations of the Grand River, Watha Mohawk Nation, and the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte at Tyendenaga (Deseronto) on the north shore of Lake Ontario west of Kingston.

		He was a member of Hiawatha Lodge, No. 35, A., F. He participated in the late war as a member of Company I, Thirteenth Regiment, Kansas Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged June 26, 1865, at Little Rock, Ark.
		Meredith was married August 26, 1866, in Hiawatha, to Miss Sarah Sprague, a native of Ohio.

		They would distrust their leaders and the principles of peace of the League, and a great white serpent was to come upon the Iroquois, and that for a time it would intermingle with the Indian people and would be accepted by the Indians, who would treat the serpent as a friend.
		As "His Majesty's Allies," the Iroquois received the Six Nations Reserve in southern Ontario, which they were to "enjoy forever" under the King's "protection." Though today the Six Nations Reserve remains their principal reserve, the autonomy which the Iroquois were to have enjoyed by natural right and by treaty turned out to be a deceit.

		By the 45th parallel, Hiawatha was 20 minutes in the lead and went on to win the class and place 12th overall out of 271 yachts.
		After a light air start that built into a heavy air run Hiawatha was second at the Southampton turning mark but failed to finish in the flags at the Island (oops) as the wind clocked and died.

		In the mid-17th century, the Southeastern Ojibway occupied an area along the eastern shore of Georgian Bay, west along the north shore of Lake Huron and north along the east shore of Lake Superior.
		Sometime after the turn of the century, the Southeastern Ojibway settled in areas around the Bay of Quinte, Lake St. Clair, in the valleys of the Grand River and the Thames River, along the north shore of Lake Ontario.
		The Ojibways of Hiawatha were at one time apart of a larger Band known as the Mississaugas of Rice, Mud and Scugog Lakes.

		The Iroquois Confederacy, or Haudenosaunee, is believed to have been formed in the fifteenth century when the legendary Hiawatha and the Great Peacemaker united the warring eastern Native American tribes.
		Prior to European colonization, the Iroquois Confederacy exercised active dominion over nearly thirty-five million acres, most of what is now the states of New York and Pennsylvania, and was considered the most powerful peacekeeping force of Native Americans east of the Mississippi River.
		This treaty, like the Treaty of Fort Stanwix, recognized the land rights of certain members of the Iroquois Confederacy, including the SNI, and was one of the first federal treaties executed between the United States and any Native American tribe under the authority of the United States Constitution.
