Topic: Hibernaculum

  Richardson's Ground Squirrel
The hibernaculum chamber is initially constructed as an excavation off the main burrow system, but that connection is plugged off with soil when the animal enters hibernation.
The hibernaculum system is a closed system consisting of a hibernaculum chamber, a drain tunnel to carry away moisture, and an exit tunnel that reaches almost to the surface.
The hibernaculum is a grass-filled chamber in which the ground squirrel curls into a ball with its nose tucked between the hind legs and enters a state of torpor.

The bank identified as a potential adder hibernaculum, was more-or-less in the centre of the proposed line of the new road.
The replacement bank was constructed on 18 May 1996 when it was judged that any reptiles would have dispersed from the original bank, and hopefully upon their return in late summer to hibernate, would find the new hibernaculum.

Bumble bee Biology - Bumble Boosters: Doing Science as a community of learners
The queue for queen emergence from a hibernaculum is the ground warming to a certain temperature.
After emergence from the hibernaculum, queens will spend a period of time feeding to gain strength and complete the development of their ovaries.
Just as a suitable hibernaculum allows a queen to survive winter, the development of a successful colony is dependent on the selection of an appropriate nest site.

Brooklin Lions Wilderness Trail - The Hibernaculum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The first reaction when we tell people that we've built a hibernaculum is usually, "A hiber-what?!?" When we explain that it's a sort of underground shelter for over-wintering snakes, the next question is often, "How will the snakes know it's there?" At least one person pictured a neon motel sign in his mind.
As she backed off we watched the snake glide out of sight into a pile of hibernaculum bricks.
For more information on the hibernaculum, check the information for Post 5 in the trail guide.

 The whipsnade hibernaculum early days
Among the many sites visited was the former Kodiak bear den at Whipsnade which has been modified to create a hibernaculum and which has been monitored as part of the Bedfordshire Bat Group’s survey programme over many years.
This hibernaculum has held hibernating Natterer’s and brown long-eared bats, even though its construction is far from ideal for bats when compared to some of the better sites in Bedfordshire such as XXXXX or XXXXXX*
This project provides the first purpose-built hibernaculum for bats at Whipsnade, however, we are not relying on this alone.

Snake Hibernaculum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The snake hibernaculums were constructed to provide a place for the Eastern Milk Snake, the Western Fox Snake and the Common Garter Snake over-winter.
This designed called for a hole to be excavated down to two feet of saturated soils, and a width of approximately 36 inches, our pit was dug to a depth of ten feet.
If we are successful in doing so, we plan on sharing our study with other conservation departments in hopes that they too will provide additional habitat for snakes when they are doing their streambank stabilization projects.

 Garter Snakes
Garters hibernate in aggregations - hundreds of snakes gathering in the same hibernaculum, spending the winter together and accessible to each other for spring breeding.
During the winter, temperatures in the hibernaculum never drops below 3-4 C (37-39 F) at which the garters may safely remain for sixteen weeks without serious loss of body weight or impact on general health.
One of the ways they are able to sustain such dormancy is to stock up on body fat by feeding heavily during the late summer.

 Making a place for bats
The Slippery Rock Watershed Coalition has just put the finishing touches on the first man-made bat hibernaculum east of the Mississippi River and is awaiting the arrival of nature's most misunderstood creatures and the only mammals capable of flight.
The hibernaculum was designed to provide a cool, dark place for bats to sleep during the day and hibernate in the winter.
Beran said the coalition's hibernaculum project took advantage of donated materials, but other watershed groups doing stream restoration and mine reclamation projects could easily and inexpensively adapt the model to their area's needs.

Horspath Parish Council Wildlife Conservation Area - The Bat Hibernaculum
The building work to create the bat hibernaculum was outside the scope of the Parish Council’s insurance cover for volunteers, and it was necessary to secure financial support from three additional sources before this major habitat creation project could proceed.
The engineering plans for the bat hibernaculum were drawn by Donald Gray, of Gray Design in Horspath, to meet the detailed requirements of English Nature.
Bob Hamlet, a local building contractor in Horspath, was engaged by Oxfordshire County Council to build a double-skinned block wall at each end of the tunnel around a structure of steel box girders, and to infill this with concrete.

 Limenitis astyanax arizonensis in Utah
This is initially evidenced by third instar larvae as they move away from their perch at the end of the leaf and begin silking the stem of the leaf to the branch; insuring that it does not fall during the winter months.
Upon completion, the third instar larva will still leave the hibernaculum a few times in order to feed before settling in and hibernating for the winter.
The hibernaculum is constructed and silked in such a way as to create a snug fit for hibernation; which is necessary as Basilarchia diapausing larvae can desiccate under arid conditions.

 WREN - Bat Hibernaculum
Due to the geography and geology of the region, natural underground sites (such as caves) are rare and a study undertaken in Norfolk has revealed that known hibernaculum sites are disappearing at a rate of nearly 2% per year.
The project aim was for the creation for a hibernaculum at High Lodge Forest Centre and involved the construction of a concrete tunnel in a secluded position.
It should encourage colonisation of species not recorded in the area, provide a safe haven for a BAP species to breed, and relieve pressure on the only other bat hibernaculum known in the immediate vicinity.
