  OIL RIGS
An oil platform is a large structure used to house workers and machinery needed to drill and then produce oil and natural gas in the ocean.
Semi-submersible rigs can be moved from place to place; and can be lowered into or raised by altering the amount of flooding in buoyancy tanks; they are generally anchored by cable anchors during drilling operations, though they can also be kept in place by the use of steerable thrusters.
A drilling rig or oil rig is a structure housing equipment used to drill for water, oil or natural gas from underground reservoirs.

Hibernia closed out 1999 with very strong performance and I’m pleased to report that this is continuing into 2000.
Unlike Hibernia, which physically rests on the ocean floor and is designed to withstand the impact of sea ice and icebergs, the FPSO is a ship-shaped, self-propelled vessel that is designed to be quickly and safely disconnected if a large iceberg or heavy sea ice approaches.
Of course, there are other oil and gas theaters around the world, which operate in deeper waters, and we will look to benefit from their experience as we move forward in the Flemish Pass.

The amount of water sucked up by offshore rigs tends to increase with the age of an oil well: As the oil is pumped out and oil levels fall inside the reservoir, more and more water comes out.
The general view of the oil industry has been that produced water is harmless to the environment because the ocean is a big place, and the effluent becomes heavily diluted once it is released into the sea.
The Canadian oil industry's 2001 report says the produced water generated off Atlantic Canada is similar in "almost all respects" to that in the North Sea.

Hibernia oil is a light sweet crude, with a density of about 32° to 34° API and a sulphur content, by weight, of 0.4-0.6%.
It was decided that the Hibernia field would be developed using a special gravity-base structure, strong enough to withstand a collision with a one-million-tonne iceberg (expected to occur once every 500 years) and a direct hit from a six-million-tonne iceberg (expected just once every 10,000 years).
Oil stored in the GBS will be exported by means of an offshore loading system (OLS) consisting of subsea pipelines, a subsurface buoy and flexible loading hoses, feeding a purpose-built shuttle tanker.
