Hickman County, the seventy-first county in order of formation, is located in the Jackson Purchase region of Kentucky and is bounded by the Mississippi River, Carlisle, Graves, and Fulton counties, and the Tennessee state line.
Because of a change in the main channel of the Mississippi, a small section of the county, known as Wolf Island, lies to the west of the river and borders Missouri.
The population of the county was 6,264 in 1970; 6,065 in 1980; and 5,566 in 1990.

In 1994 the Hickman County Historical Society placed a monument at Hickman's grave and built a fence around the gravesite.
In 1807 the county extended all the way to the present Alabama state line, and Vernon, on the Piney River, became the first county seat.

 Battle of River Raisin - Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives
The Battle of River Raisin was the largest battle ever fought on Michigan soil, and concluded a streak of U.S. setbacks during the early months of the War of 1812.
These officers were honored by the government of Kentucky by the naming nine counties after them.
In 1813, U.S. forces re-entered Michigan and using the battle cry "Remember the Raisin!" defeated and drove the British out of the territory.
