Hickman line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hickman lines may remain in place for extended periods and are used when long-term intravenous access is needed.
The insertion of a Hickman line is usually done under sedation or a general anesthetic by a radiologist or surgeon.
Hickman et al, after whom the system is named, further modified the principles with subcutaneous tunneling and a Dacron cuff that formed an infection barrier.

Central lines are for “long term” use, meaning they will be left in place for months to years.

What is the difference between a Hickman® line and a Groshong® line? : Cancerbackup   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
The internal end (the end which lies in the vein) of the Hickman line (and the similar Broviac catheter) have an open end.
This means that blood from the vein can flow freely into the Hickman (or Broviac) line but only flows into the Groshong line when suction is applied from a syringe attached to the external end of the line.
With Groshong lines there is no need for external clamps (because of the internal valve) and only an occasional flush with sterile salt water solution is needed.

Death after inserting Hickman line was probably avoidable   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
The death of a 15 year old girl in 1998 due to a complication of inserting a Hickman line could have been avoided if the length of introducers used in these procedures was reduced, argues a consultant surgeon in this week’s BMJ.
He believes that a major factor is the design of the equipment, and in particular the length of the introducing dilator.
However the typical length of the dilator provided by most manufacturers for line insertion is almost 20 cm, so when it is placed fully within the vein in the neck as required its tip is lying within the heart.

This is preferable to submerging your line and PICC in bathwater because of the risk of infection.
