Hidalgo was a man of books; a mighty revolution had taken place on the American continent, of which he could not be ignorant, and the events of later date in Europe, officially promulgated had awakened a deep feeling in the whole people, to which he was no stranger.

Hidalgo Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Hidalgo has all the ingredients for a ripping good yarn in the spirit of the classic adventure films of Hollywood's Golden Age: a stalwart hero, a fair damsel in distress, sneering villains, hairbreadth escapes, and swashbuckling action scenes.
Although Hidalgo is frequently exciting and has been handsomely produced on a grand scale, you can't help but wonder what either Spielberg or Cameron could have done with this material, which seems tailor-made for their skills as escapist filmmakers nonpareil.
Occasionally, Hidalgo springs to vivid life, especially in a sharply staged and edited rescue mission Hopkins leads on the desert city enclave of the evil Katib (Silas Carson).

 Hidalgo (2004): Reviews
Hidalgo can still be a wonder to behold, especially in its dynamic racing sequences, but the movie bogs down in its midsection with a needless kidnapping subplot that ultimately becomes quite tedious.
The lost opportunity of Hidalgo isn't that it fails to live up to its potential for romantic adventure, but that it fails to dig into the romance between man and horse that's at the heart of the story.
The much too long, primitively plotted family action adventure Hidalgo, directed by Joe Johnston, has a handful of well-handled sequences but, given the young audience the film is intended for, the picture may be like having to finish an entire pot of broccoli to get a couple of jelly beans for dessert.

 HIDALGO
Some of this historical context actually feels a bit force-fed and contrived, as if the filmmakers were trying to sprinkle truths on half-truths to bring validity to their story.
Yet, despite this, HIDALGO works on a level of being a light-hearted, fun, and nostalgic period action picture that seems like a throwback to a kinder and more innocent type of film that Gary Cooper or Errol Flynn would have make.
HIDALGO is an overall fun ride, and its very lack of historical credibility should not undermine that it’s a genuinely harmless, innocuous, and silly time at the movies.

Frank's Reel Movie Reviews - Movie Review - Hidalgo
Hidalgo brings to life the story of Frank T. Hopkins, a pony express rider who claims, among other things, to have won nearly every long distance horseback race that existed at the time.
While a little research shows that the "true" portion of its claim to be based on a true story is anything but, Hidalgo's real problems stem from factors far more significant than whether or not Hopkins actually lived up to all of his claims.
Hidalgo is a sprawling, wide-screen, western epic that's not only overly ambitious but also suffers from a touch of multiple personality disorder.

 Filmtracks: Hidalgo (James Newton Howard)
Hidalgo: (James Newton Howard) With a winter and early spring season of 2004 dominated at every moment by the controversial The Passion of the Christ, the horse-racing adventure film Hidalgo is another attempt by Hollywood to unseat the religious film from its immense popularity.
While the film's advertising hails Hidalgo as being based on a true story, there is debate and speculation about how truthful the memoirs of rider Frank T. Hopkins really were, and many critics have agreed that the film is a bit preposterous and, predictably, a tad racist.
Where Hidalgo exceeds Peter Pan, though, is in the few moments of ethnic magic to be heard throughout the entire score, and along with the multiple broad themes for grand vistas, Hidalgo will likely please the casual Howard collector.

 Review: Hidalgo
Disney's Hidalgo, about a late 19th century long distance horse race across the Arabian Desert, is a sporadically entertaining adventure movie that is hampered by poor pacing, a badly focused screenplay, and cheesy special effects.
Hidalgo's competition is comprised of 100 desert-bred horses, most of which appear far better conditioned than the American animal to win under such adverse, arid conditions.
It has little to do with reality." Yes, Hidalgo is a family film (albeit a mediocre one), and it deserves to be seen for what it is, not as the centerpiece of a controversy that has resulted from Disney's dishonesty.
