Hidalgo (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hidalgo is a 2004 film based on the life and tales of former horse rider Frank Hopkins and his endurance horse Hidalgo, a mustang.
The Sheikh puts his claim to the test, pitting the American cowboy and his mustang, Hidalgo, against the world's greatest Arabian horses and Bedouin riders, some of whom are determined to prevent a foreigner - and especially an "impure" horse - from finishing the race.
A recurring theme in the film is the idea, presented as a fact, that Hopkins is half Caucasian and half Native American, being born of a marriage between such people.

 Political Film Society - Hidalgo
Coming on the hoofs of Seabiscuit (2003), the film Hidalgo is the second film in a year that celebrates a longsuffering nonthoroughbred horse.
When the film begins, Hopkins observes the effects of the senseless and unprovoked Wounded Knee Massacre on December 28, 1890, which tragically begins when a deaf Native American fails to hear the command to surrender his rifle.
Hidalgo, directed by Joe Johnston, claims to be based on a true story but is mostly fictional; a more apt title would be "The Legend of Frank Hopkins," which could then correctly refer to an oral history by a Blackfoot chief.

Mensah's had minor roles in films such as "Bless The Child", "Jason X" and "Tears of the Sun" and his talent lies in the fact that he can be so memorable with just a line or two of dialogue.
In the film he plays Sharif's bodyguard and with the right amount of charisma and physicality (as well as good use of a sword) he knows how to become noticeable in the background, giving me the feeling that we'll see more of this guy in the future.
There's a wonderful scene in the film where Frank rescues his greatest competitor in the race from death by quicksand and refuses to grant the man's request to die an "honorable death" in the desert.

Once he accepts, the film turns into cliché overdrive throwing at us such sub plots as: contempt at a white man being in an Arab race, the Sheik with the heart of gold, the captured Sheik's daughter, the horse that's too small but never gives up and the incredible villain-who-shouldn't-be-a-villain storyline.
These inserted shots interrupt the pace of the film when it should be striving to be akin to something like a swashbuckling adventure in the desert.
Hidalgo is a great character, perhaps the most developed in the entire film.

Reeling: the Movie Review Show's review of Hidalgo
Armed with the details of the controversy I approached "Hidalgo" with an open mind - I have always taken, with a grain of salt, Hollywood's declaration of films "based on a true story." In very few cases have I found the fiction on the screen to actually tell the whole truth.
"Hidalgo," true or not, is a rousing, if overly long, action adventure that combines the contest that is the centerpiece of the film with typical Hollywood manipulation.
The promise of a $100000 winner's purse is too strong a temptation for Frank to ignore and the man and his horse head across the ocean to their destiny.

A certain aspect that stands out in the film is the fact that it not only shows the race, but the different struggles to survive with hardly any accessories.
The film nonetheless is enjoyable, but its flaws are noticeable and annoying, but it doesn't affect the film as a whole I must say.
Hidalgo is nothing spectacular, but the adventure in the film is exciting and plotted well.

Hidalgo is the name of a legendary American horse that took part in the notorious Arabian desert race of 1890, the first non-Arabian animal to do so.
There is a definite old-style Saturday matinee feel to the way the film is shot, and in his first solo lead role since he became a worldwide icon with Lord of the Rings, Mortensen certainly proves that he has a suitable old-fashioned charm to match.
Whether or not this is the case, the film is ultimately rather a forgettable affair.

Far from it: they are too close to their subject, and seem to be forgetting that this is simply a case of two mythmaking machines — Disney and Hopkins himself, who seemed to have been as deeply invested in perpetuating his possibly fictitious exploits — competing for the imagination of the populace.
Frank Hopkins and his trusty mustang, Hidalgo, overpowering superior Arabian horses and Bedouin riders in a 3,000-mile race across the Ocean of Fire just happens to be one more entry in the mythical register.
The power of myth — especially when it is commodified as a film, toy, or war machine — is sometimes more important than the scientific nuts and bolts, the historical why and when.

 Filmtracks: Hidalgo (James Newton Howard)
Hidalgo: (James Newton Howard) With a winter and early spring season of 2004 dominated at every moment by the controversial The Passion of the Christ, the horse-racing adventure film Hidalgo is another attempt by Hollywood to unseat the religious film from its immense popularity.
While the film's advertising hails Hidalgo as being based on a true story, there is debate and speculation about how truthful the memoirs of rider Frank T. Hopkins really were, and many critics have agreed that the film is a bit preposterous and, predictably, a tad racist.
A safe choice for any film, Howard continues to write strong scores that service their films well, but his music teases film score enthusiasts who await the composer's evolution into one of the top few artists in the industry.

"Hidalgo" is directed by Joe Johnson, who got his start working on such films as "Star Wars" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark".
Although the film moves along at a nice trot for the majority of the two hour length, mixing in action and character development, a few moments - such as the lengthy rescue sequence of the Shiek's daughter - could have been altered or lost altogether.
Despite the questionable marketing of the film as a "true story", I'm glad to see that Disney's latest ads market the picture more as an action/drama than a "family film", as "Hidalgo" certainly isn't the latter.

Hidalgo Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Hidalgo has all the ingredients for a ripping good yarn in the spirit of the classic adventure films of Hollywood's Golden Age: a stalwart hero, a fair damsel in distress, sneering villains, hairbreadth escapes, and swashbuckling action scenes.
While Hidalgo's director Joe Johnston (October Sky) is no hack, he lacks the bravura and sense of wonder of Steven Spielberg and James Cameron at their best.
Although Hidalgo is frequently exciting and has been handsomely produced on a grand scale, you can't help but wonder what either Spielberg or Cameron could have done with this material, which seems tailor-made for their skills as escapist filmmakers nonpareil.

In treating the film as a work of art, they conclude that it is "worthy to be mentioned with … classics of Christian culture." They proceed to vigorously explore the connections between the film's imagery and traditions in cross-centered art.
Hidalgo, the new film from director Joe Johnston (Jumanji, Jurassic Park III), chronicles the "true story" of Frank T. Hopkins, a Native American who championed a mustang named Hidalgo as a racehorse and entered him in a 3,000-mile race across the Arabian desert.
The film is the farthest thing from "fact-based." At Christianity Today Movies, Russ Breimeier explores how the story has been "fictionalized beyond belief." Meanwhile, the Council on American-Islamic Relations has declared that Hidalgo portrays Arabs and Muslims in a demeaning fashion, and that John Fusco's script is fiction from beginning to end.

In Hidalgo’s case, the story in question is terrific fun, which makes for perfect family viewing, but the tale it purports to tell may never have happened.
Yet the film also feels like a family version of The Last Samurai, given Hopkins’ self-loathing for helping to commit military atrocities, mixed with elements of Lawrence of Arabia, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Seabiscuit and Sinbad.
Yet, for all of its failings, and dubious grounding in reality, the film does remain a hopelessly old-fashioned, feel-good story, which is bolstered by a typically charismatic star turn from Mortensen and a wily supporting performance from the veteran Omar Sharif.
