Hidalgo County is a county located in the state of New Mexico.
Hidalgo was created on February 25, 1919 from the southern part of Grant County.
In the county the population is spread out with 31.70% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 25.20% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 13.60% who are 65 years of age or older.

Hidalgo is on the Rio Grande at the junction of State Highway 336 and U.S. Highway 281, five miles south of McAllen in southern Hidalgo County.
The population in Hidalgo was 250 by 1920.
Hidalgo was incorporated by 1931, and by 1940 the original townsite had been inundated by the shifting waters of the Rio Grande.
