NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Wire frame model
It is created by specifying each edge of the physical object where two mathematically continuous smooth surfaces meet, or by connecting an object's constituent vertices using straight lines or curves.
Hidden line removal is an extension of wireframe rendering where lines (or segments of lines) covered by surfaces are not drawn.
Since wireframe renderings are relatively simple and fast to calculate, they are often used in cases where a high screen frame rate is needed (for instance, when working with a particularly complex 3D model, or in real-time systems that model exterior phenomena).

Hidden line removal (HLR) is the process of computing which edges are not obscured by the faces of parts for a particular view and the arrangement of parts in the projection of a model into a two-dimensional plane.
Face drawing would be fast due to the fact that the hidden edges are overwritten (rather than their intersections computed), however computing the points in the interior of the face is time consuming.
An algorithm for the determination of hidden lines in a three dimensional model is presented.

Lines 650, 750, and 1150 will switch PN to 1 whenever the line number being plotted is exactly divisible by D. This is what colors the border of the mesh with the color corresponding to a PN of 1.

Hidden line removal is an extension of (Click link for more info and facts about wireframe) wireframe rendering where lines (or segments of lines) covered by surfaces are not drawn.
This is not the same as (Click link for more info and facts about hidden face removal) hidden face removal since this involves depth and occlusion while the other involves normals.
A commonly used algorithm to implement it is Arthur Appel's algorithm (developed at IBM in the late 1960's).

Hidden line removal (HLR) is an important aspect of creating an accurate 2D representation from a 3D model.
Using HLR, the converted model only displays those parts visible from a given perspective; hidden (or occluded) edges normally included in a 3D model representation are removed, or drawn in a line style that indicates their obscured position.
Hidden - Edges that are hidden by material in the current perspective; for example, in a slightly nonorthogonal view of a cube, edges along the rear side of the shape.

The hidden lines (0,1) of polygon 40 remain hidden while the background color (0,0) is written to frame buffer 12 since BP1 is disabled and remains binary 1 and binary 0 is written to BP2, i.e.
Pixels 63, 70 are background and become the hidden line color 0,1 during the drawing of the hidden line color for polygon 50, and pixels 67, 68, 71 which were visible lines remain as such.

 Tech Soft 3D - developer.hoops3d.com
One of the primary downsides of using HLR algorithms is that they are inherently expensive as they need to sort and clip all the edges against all the facets in the scene (an n*log(n) algorithm at best).
The standard way of faking HLR is to use standard frame-buffer rendering, which is normally hardware accelerated, and simply turn the visibility of edges on and set the color of the facets to the color of the window background.
The result will be that the patterned lines of the second segment will blend in with the visible edges in the first segment leaving only the patterned edges visible at the locations of the hidden lines.

"Hidden lines" are understood to mean those polygon edges which would not be seen from the chosen viewpoint due to the interposition of other polygons between the viewpoint and the line in question.

Gnuplot: An Interactive Plotting Program: hidden3d   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
In contrast to the usual display in gnuplot, hidden line removal actually treats the given function or data grids as real surfaces that can't be seen through, so parts behind the surface will be hidden by it.
When hidden3d is set, both the hidden portion of the surface and possibly its contours drawn on the base (see contour) as well as the grid will be hidden.
This means that the appearance of a function may be different when plotted with hidden3d than when plotted with `nohidden3d` because in the latter case functions are evaluated at each sample.

In Varkon, hidden line removal is accomplished by "dressing" a model in b_planes (bounded planes).
Thus, if you use triangular b_planes to define the ends of a cylinder, you get a radial pattern of lines created by the b_planes' edges when hidden line removal is performed.
I have found it convenient to reserve one level for the use of hidden b_planes and simply to create all b_planes in that level throughout the entire model.
