Hide and Seek Movie Review at Hollywood Video   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Sure, elements of Hide and Seek are derivative—that's bound to happen when the number of movies produced exceeds the number of possible twists—but the bottom line is that this movie is highly compelling and utterly creepy.
And in Hide and Seek, just out on DVD, her Bette Davis eyes are pools of grief and terror as the child whose new best friend appears to harbor an alarming homicidal streak.
"Hide and seek" is her new pal's favorite game, Emily informs her father, and it all seems harmless enough, until a series of cruel pranks becomes ever more elaborate and dangerous—and far too complicated for a child to pull off on her own.

Hide and Seek, 2005, A Review by Phil Calabro
The movie is composed of nothing more than 45-minute intervals of nothing, a rough cut of 1 or 2 good scares, and the confusing ending.
In the end, 'Hide and Seek' is just another silly film that's miscast with good actors, and tarnished once the screenwriter decides to throw in the unimpressive finale.
'Hide and Seek' is a formulaic and silly flick that either bores or gives a short-lasting jolt to the audience.

 Hide and Seek (2005)
I’m not entirely sure whether the folks behind Hide and Seek intend it to be a legitimately scary movie, or just a fun and trashy bit of camp, but it doesn’t entirely succeed as either.
While the movie attempts to keep the whole “who or what is Charlie and what the HELL will he do next?!?!?” tension cranked at eleven, the answer to the question is obvious about 15 minutes into the film to anyone who’s paying attention…or, for that matter, to anyone who’s ever seen a movie before.
Hide and Seek has its moments, and might make for an entertaining DVD rental for a dark and stormy night.

Since John Polson's "Hide and Seek" is a thriller, he finds the ideal new home: A vast frame summer home, with lots of attics and basements and crannies and staircases, on a lakeside that must be jolly enough in the summertime, but is deserted now in the wintertime.
Also a movie where the father brings home a woman for dinner, and the daughter resents her role in her father's life.
At the beginning of "Hide and Seek," I thought I was going to be interested in the characters all the way to the end, but then the plot went on autopilot.

Hide and Seek is not your typical thriller.
Hide and Seek gives both performers a chance to show their range, but the biggest surprise is perhaps that Fanning can match De Niro step for step.
While the style and content of Hide and Seek are very different than The Shining--Hide and Seek is even more understated--that's also a slower-paced film that finds much of its effectiveness from its thick atmosphere and commendable performances, and fans of Kubrick's great horror film should find enough to enjoy here as well.

TheMovieBoy Review - Hide and Seek (2005)
"Hide and Seek" features two actors—one a veteran A-lister returning to his dramatic roots after a string of comedic misfires, the other quickly becoming the mostly rightfully in-demand child star of her generation—working at the top of their games.
Directed by John Polson with a similar sleek, stylish vigor he injected into 2002's "Swimfan," "Hide and Seek" is an absorbing mystery-thriller for its first hour, indelibly creepy and scrupulously paced, until it races off the tracks toward a dumb, albeit predictable, twist ending and violent, distasteful slasher movie conventions.
Also disheartening about "Hide and Seek" is its ultimate relegation toward cheap scares, questionable child endangerment, and pointless death scenes of both the human and animal variety.

A FromTheBalcony Review: Hide And Seek (2005)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Hide and Seek takes an intriguing first hour of buildup and flushes it down the toilet by downgrading itself to another "killer on the loose" fable that has been done time and again as of late.
The critical error that Hide and Seek makes is the decision to reveal its big secret little more than halfway through the film.
Hide and Seek, sadly enough, is another throwaway January leftover.

Hide and Seek (2005) Movie Review - RopeofSilicon.com
The movie turns out to be one the worst, most clichéd films I have seen in a long time.
With a lack of an original plot, the movie tries to rely on the acting to carry it, which does not happen, and while the acting is good, nothing can save this atrocity.
Hide and Seek is an embarassment and a film in which De Niro, Fanning, Shue and Janssen should all be questioning their involvement while looking for new agents at the same time.

Through its first two-thirds, at least, Hide and Seek does a good enough job of piquing our curiosity that the movie's ultimate dumbness is more than a minor insult.
The movie is OK for a January horror picture, but given the premise and the cast--it should wring you out emotionally as it's scaring you witless.
Hide and Seek follows no semblance of internal logic--the unveiling of Charlie is a ludicrous cheat, the last reel a unique paroxysm of rancid idiocy.

Movieman's Guide to the Movies - Hide and Seek (2005) - Widescreen Edition - Robert De Niro, Dakota Fanning
Hide and Seek is about psychologist David Callaway (De Niro) who moves with his daughter, Emily (Fanning), to a remote part in upstate New York with the hope that it would help her deal with the death of her mother who had committed suicide.
I don't think I need to name them, do I? As a whole, Hide and Seek isn't a bad film per se and is probably worth a rental, but this isn't a movie I really want to see again anytime soon.
For their parts, Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning are both good (Fanning could certainly be creepy, though the jet fl hair and chilling eyes help), but neither of them could dig it out of the murkiness of a sludgy and predictable plot.

Hide and Seek (2005) Movie Review - The Hollywood News
Hide and Seek boasts a roster of A-list acting talent, perhaps the two finest actors of their respective generations in DeNiro and Dakota Fanning and, if the trailers can be trusted, a promising evening of thrills and chills at the Bijou.
DeNiro plays a Clinical Psychologist, and for her part, Fanning is perfect as the badly drawn girl, with the dark, bagged eyes that hide behind them the secret of the film.

“Hide and Seek” is a dark, disturbing tale of a father pushed to the breaking point and his young ten year old daughter who is cruelly caught in the midst of his nightmare.
This movie is too frightening for children and aptly rated R, even though there is but one vulgarity, no sex scenes or nudity to speak of.

Hide and Seek is a mediocre thriller with a stellar cast.
And as a thriller/horror movie should, this one provides a few jumps and thrills along with its mysteries, even if some of them are by the numbers horror movie standards, such as the heroine hearing a noise in the cellar and going to investigate.

The new Twentieth Century Fox thriller Hide and Seek is a surprisingly sleek and suspenseful tale of melancholy, paranoia and murder that unfortunately goes so far off the rails during its final third I almost had to laugh.
For much of Hide and Seek, he underplays David perfectly, letting the audience absorb the growing tension through his ever more restless eyes.
The publicists beg mercilessly that we critics don’t give away the movie’s supposedly ingenious “twist,” and while I’m more the willing to acquiesce I can’t help but feel audiences are going to come away with that same look of disgust they carried walking out of last summer’s The Village.

The problem with this little bit of trickery isn’t just that it is redundant and tired, but that once all of the cards are revealed, the glaring plot holes run through your mind for the remainder of the film.
The main reason why it doesn’t work is due to the fact that the most bizarre set of coincidences, as well as the most befuddling character motivations, are necessary in order for this film to come close to working, and even then it makes very little sense from a practical standpoint.
Despite quality actors, Hide and Seek proves that some films are better off staying hidden.

Hollywood Gothique: Hide and Seek (2005) Review
This mechanical construction robs HIDE AND SEEK of any genuine impact, reminding us once again that the surprise ending of Hitchcock's PSYCHO works because, in retrospect, it is integral to the story.
With its slick production values and solid cast, HIDE AND SEEK cannot help generating a few scares, but by the end the misguided story-telling has undermined any attempt to create a solid, serious thriller.
In spite of this, the audio commentary continually insists on how good the scenes are ("I like this scene," "There's nothing wrong with this scene," etc), expressing regret that they had to be removed to speed up pacing; at least director Polson seems aware that many of the scenes were redundant.

If the ridiculous title and the cheap emotional flmail of putting a pretty little girl in peril aren't enough to tip you off that "Hide and Seek" is a rotten horror movie, then describing its myriad of other deficiencies may be a waste of time.

The year's first laugh-out-loud-funny thriller, "Hide and Seek," owes much to Stephen King and not a little to the perilous path of being too self-referential.
Unfortunately, a far more frequent occurrence in "Hide and Seek" is inadvertent laughter at the film's silly dialogue and the dunderheaded actions of its characters.
It's really Fanning's film anyway, allowing her to add a gothic layer to the preternatural children she played in "I Am Sam," "Man on Fire" and the sci-fi miniseries "Taken." Any campiness is strictly the result of John Polson's direction.
