Takahashi Hideki might best be described as the handsome, affable, slightly introverted, younger prince to the Kings of Nikkatsu Action.
In 1963, Takahashi Hideki was lucky enough to be assigned to star in what would prove to be one of the genre's greatest examples, Matsuo Akinori's excellent yakuza drama, "Otoko no Monsho" ("Emblem of a Man").
Takahashi Hideki carried on with Nikkatsu, appearing in a total of 88 features (including romantic dramas, comedies, modern action, and yakuza productions) until he left the studio in 1971.

A lower-level yakuza obsessed with caring for his younger brother, Tetsu (Hideki Takahashi) kills a rival gang boss on orders from his superiors but is set up by rivals in his own gang who want to see him dead.
When Tetsu's more sensitive, artistically inclined brother shoots Tetsu's would-be assassin, the two brothers decide to buy illegal passage to Manchuria — but a con man swindles them out of all their cash and the pair are forced to seek employment at a mine to earn their escape-money.
The monaural Dolby Digital audio (Japanese with English subtitles) is unspectacular but very clean, and more than adequate to the task.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Fighting Elegy: The Criterion Collection
The result is a visually audacious document of youthful rebellion buoyed by a playful tone masking a doozy of a last-second perception shift that throws into sinister relief everything that has come before.
Until that reveal, the film tells the knockabout story of teenaged Kiroku (Hideki Takahashi), a timid, religious lad bullied by his peers and tortured by his lust for his host family's beautiful daughter, Michiko (Junko Asano).
Both are morally ill influences on his nascent manhood; his schoolmates taunting him into savage brawls, and Michiko awakening his sexual desire, which his Catholic upbringing tells him to sublimate rather than outright relieve.

Directed by Suzuki Seijun [Tokyo Drifter, Branded to Kill] and scripted by Shindo Kaneto [who was in turn the director of Onibaba], Elegy to Violence has a lot more to say about conformity and militarism than allegedly profound films like Teshigihara's Face of Another.
As the young lad torn between swooning adoration for his Catholic girlfriend and the sense of power and purity he finds in paramilitary gangs, Hideki Takahashi overplays marvelously.
He is an encyclopedia of twitches and cringing at first, but that gradually gives way to ridiculous hypermachismo as he gets into more and more fights.

 filmcritic.com Movie Review: Fighting Elegy
Martial law was instated and the rebellion quelled; the following year Kita was executed for treason, and Japan was set on the deadly course that led her into WWII.
It matters for the reason that Suzuki's muscular Fighting Elegy, which opens in 1932, follows the exploits of a middle school student named Kiroku (Hideki Takahashi) as he fights his way to the top of the testosterone-fuelled machine that this rise in militarism first tooled.
In this he is driven by patriotism, of course, but his primary motive in building his body and defying authority is to sublimate the intolerable lust he feels toward proper, Catholic Michiko (Junko Asano), with whose family he is lodging.

dOc DVD Review: Tattooed Life (Irezumi ichidai) (1965) - Printable
Maverick Japanese director Seijun Suzuki is best known in the West for his absurdist 1966 western Tokyo Drifter and the bizarre yakuza thriller Branded to Kill, released the following year, but these films are only the tip of the Suzuki iceberg.
It's the story of Tetsu (Hideki Takahashi), a yakuza who's just been betrayed a mob associate, and his brother Kenji (Akira Yamauchi), who comes to Tetsu's rescue by killing his would-be assassin.
The two try to escape to Manchuria, but their money is swindled away, and they end up working for the Yamashita family, whose construction crew is blasting a tunnel through the mountains.
