Hideo Nakata, by far best-known in the west for the ultra-smash hit film Ringu, departs from the horror films that have paid his way for the past few years and delves into the straight mystery.
Hideo Nakata, who was behind Ringu (1998), has created an interesting and suspenseful story in Chaos as the beautiful wife of a wealthy businessman vanishes.
Nakata's better known for his horror genre entries (the first two Ring films and Dark Water), yet genre definitions hardly seem important, as he brings to bear the same technique to imbue this neo-noirish film with tension and intrigue.

Unfortunately, Nakata allows the ghost's early appearances to last far too long, instead of using brief flashes that make the viewer wonder what exactly they've just seen.
Nakata himself has stated that his main mistake was to reveal the ghost too early and too completely, and it's hard to disagree.
Given that the film is barely 75 minutes in length, Nakata could have extended it by another half-an-hour without stretching the patience of the audience.

We are here back in the (1992) days when Nakata's highest accomplishments were his made-for-TV short horror stories released through the ubiquitous Honto ni Atta series wherin many a great horror director had their experimental beginnings.
Thus the true value of this collection is not for the shock value nor even perhaps for their being effective ghost stories, but rather as a glimpse into the early evolution of a director who can easily be said to be one of the most influential in the genre.
Thus it is clear that Nakata would not haven chosen these particular tales based on their originality, but rather, I believe, on his interest in the nature of the ghosts each tale presents.

 ToxicUniverse.com - Hideo Nakata - 2003 - Chaos Movies Review
Borrowing elements from sources like the cinema of Alfred Hitchcock and film noir, Hideo Nakata's 1999 thriller Chaos isn't something that's groundbreakingly original, yet it plays with the audience's expectations in a way that makes it interesting (and occasionally confounding) despite the familiarity of the concept.
Nakata (who is best known for directing 1998's Ringu, which inspired the recent American remake, The Ring) crafts a dark and intriguing tale of betrayal where nothing is as it seems.
Nakata's direction seems much more assured here than it did in his earlier film (a film that I continue to think is vastly overrated even in the pantheon of Japanese horror cinema).

I think it was quite a coup to get Hideo Nakata, the director of Ringu and Ringu 2, to direct here, but I think the vision he brings to this film also explains part of the disconnect we've seen with some fans of The Ring.
I love Samara, though; thankfully, Nakata chose not to go the CGI route with her at all (even still, she's not half as creepy as her original Japanese counterpart), which would have made a mockery of the whole creep factor.
