 HIDEOUS KINKY
Less informative, but about as entertaining and dramatically structured as a tourist-based documentary, the hideously named "Hideous Kinky" is more interested in serving as a promotional stock footage piece for the Moroccan tourist board than as a compelling motion picture.
As such, and despite the star presence of Winslet, this film is doomed to disappear from theaters faster than the real subject of Kate's last film actually did in the North Atlantic.
All looks and nearly void of any substance, this film is a testament to the old saying of not judging a book by its cover.

It may be a little over long but from a visual sense, Hideous Kinky works.
I must say that I was not fully sure of what I was walking into when I made way into Hideous Kinky.
It has one far from erotic sex scene and a small love affair, but neither serve as a major part of the film (nor a jumping point for the lead character to find herself).

Nick's Flick Picks: The Blog: Screening: Hideous Kinky
Though several shots imply that Hideous Kinky is a sort of dream-record of the characters' experiences—and that the archetypal exoticism of certain Arabic places, people, and spectacles might thus be taken as character points rather than simple weaknesses of the film—it's still a little distancing.
The distinguishing achievement of Hideous Kinky is that, compared to several movies about young sojourners—especially when those sojourners are women, and even more especially when they are mothers—this film does not exist to judge Julia.
Neither an endorsement of her free spirit nor a condemnation of her behavior, Hideous Kinky manages to represent the texture, risks, and pleasures of this lifestyle without much editorializing, and the characterizations of everyone involved, including the young daughters, is pretty compelling.

ideous Kinky," Gillies MacKinnon's film about a single mother (Kate Winslet) and her identity-seeking trip to Morocco in the drug-hazy days of the early 1970s, trudges along an all-too-familiar path: the soul-finding trip to an exotic locale.

My movie friend, the Romantic Comedy Wimp, with whom I saw Gillies Mackinnon's new film Hideous Kinky, loved it.
By the way, Hideous Kinky has nothing to do with 'hideous' and is certainly not 'kinky.' It is just two words thrown together, a game the two girls play to pass the time.
I didn't believe Kate Winslet, and if you don't believe her then all the events that happen in the film carry less emotional impact than they should.

Hideous Kinky - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hideous Kinky is an autobiographical novel by Esther Freud, daughter of British painter Lucian Freud, and great-granddaughter of Sigmund Freud.
It is also the 1998 film, based on that novel, about a young English mother (Kate Winslet) who moves from London to Morocco with her two young daughters.

"Hideous Kinky" may only deserve to be remembered because it's the first film to be financed with National Lottery arts funding, and the one on which Winslet met husband Jim Threapleton, but it deserves to be seen because it works.
I can't for the life of me remember the name of one, but they played on television all the time when I was growing up, and "Hideous Kinky" evokes their flavour, as well as containing multitudes of more obvious period detail, in the costumes and the sets.
"Hideous Kinky" takes place in Morocco in 1972, where Julia (Kate Winslet), a twentysomething from London, is single-handedly raising her two young daughters Bea (Bella Riza) and Lucy (Carrie Mullan).

In "Hideous Kinky," his film of the Esther Freud novel, director Gillies MacKinnon goes for something like an open-ended approach to the picaresque material.
And even though the movie is a mess, Winslet's choosing "Hideous Kinky" as the follow-up to "Titanic" turns out to be a canny choice, a conscious decision to scrape off the faux glamour of James Cameron's mega-production (even though she was just about the only believably human thing in it).

Virtual Urth - HIDEOUS KINKY - Reviewed By Jill Cozzi
The latest Kate Winslet vehicle, HIDEOUS KINKY (from a novel by Esther Freud based on her childhood with her adventurous mother), is neither.
HIDEOUS KINKY is worth a look, if only for some excellent performances by Winslet and the girls, and as a breathtaking travelogue.
But I found it a disturbing film -- I kept envisioning 35-year-old Bea, sitting in a therapist's office, trying to overcome the damage of having to parent her own mother at the tender age of eight.

For all that Hideous Kinky introduces us to an unusual culture and takes us on a whirlwind trip of Morocco, the central feature of the film is the human element.
What differentiates Hideous Kinky from the average road movie is the strength and complexity of the central relationship between Julia (Kate Winslet) and her offspring: 8-year old Bea (Bella Riza) and 6-year old Lucy (Carrie Mullan).

Its story is very linear, offering virtually no peaks or dips, and would be rather boring were it not for the wonderful performances from the children, who both make their acting debuts in this film.
Based on Esther Freud’s novel (yes, Sigmund’s granddaughter) and directed by wily Scotsman Gillies MacKinnon (Regeneration), Kinky is likely to draw comparisons to The English Patient, but it doesn’t live up to the analogy.
Also of concern to the girls is Julia’s very open relationship with a local street performer named Bilal (Saïd Taghmaoui, Hate).

Even when the film begins to degenerate, their performances are still able to make Holy Smoke look better than it actually is. There are also some funny moments in the film, mostly dealing with Barron's family, and unintentionally funny moments that arise from the use of special effects.
The film also includes a short segment on actual cults, including Jonestown, Charles Manson, and Heaven's Gate, that serves no real purpose except to remind viewers that cults are supposed to be a part of the film.

A Scottish actor whose heritage is betrayed as much by his pale skin and red hair as it is by his accent, Kevin McKidd first earned recognition in 1996 with parts in Trainspotting and Small Faces, two films that helped to put the Scottish film industry on the world cinema map.
The huge success of the latter film got McKidd noticed, although his performance was largely overshadowed by those of co-stars Ewan McGregor and Robert Carlyle.
