Hierarchical model - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A hierarchical database is a kind of database management system that links records together in a tree data structure such that each record type has only one owner (e.g., an order is owned by only one customer).
Hierarchical structures were widely used in the first mainframe database management systems.
Hierarchical relationships between different types of data can make it very easy to answer some questions, but very difficult to answer others.

The hierarchical sequence is also important because hierarchical data-manipulation languages, such as that used in IMS, use it as a basis for defining hierarchical database operations.
For example, a hierarchical database occurrence of the hierarchical schema shown in Figure D.4 would consist of a number of occurrence trees similar to the one shown in Figure D.5, one for each distinct department.
A PCR type is usually implemented by using the hierarchical sequence, whereas a VPCR type is usually implemented by establishing a pointer (a physical one containing an address, or a logical one containing a key) from a virtual child record to its virtual parent record.

More specifically, a hierarchical database is defined as an ordered set of data wherein elements of data in the set are composed of different occurrences of a single type of database format.

Database Models: Hierarcical, Network, Relational, Object-Oriented, Semistructured, Associative and Context.
In such database there is no clear separation between the data and the schema, and the degree to which it is structured depends on the application.
Such databases subsume the modelling power of recent extensions of flat relational databases, to nested databases which allow the nesting (or encapsulation) of entities, and to object databases which, in addition, allow cyclic references between objects.
Because main addressed unit of context database is an Object, the pointer is made to Object instead of a field of this Object.

The hierarchical model will handle network structures only through some tricks, but this is not a big problem because the majority of relationships are indeed hierarchical.

In a hierarchical database, data is grouped in records, which are subdivided into a series of segments.
In a hierarchical database, the structure of the database is designed to reflect logical dependencies-certain data is dependent on the existence of certain other data.
In a hierarchical database, an attempt is made to group data in a one-to-many relationship.

Scribe Notes on Distributed Search over the Hidden Web: Hierarchical Database Sampling and Selection.
Every database has got a content summary or itself, which includes the document frequencies (number of documents the word appears in the database) of all the words in the database.
It does this by looking into the content summary of the databases and then mapping the user query words with the content summary query words and then taking the rank factor into consideration and then giving out the database where the relevant retrieved documents are more for that particular query.
Future work would be to find out methods for the better construction of the content summaries and database selection schemes because some queries may be in such a way that the compute may not be able to figure out what the query is about and to look into which sort of data base.

Database Models   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The theory behind the relational database model is discussed the section entitled 'Characteristics of a Relational Database'; this section focuses on the distinctions between the relational model and other database models
If you are using a non-relational database, you probably have to modify the application that will access this information by including 'pointers' to the new data.
With a relational database, the information is immediately accessible because it is automatically related to the other data by virtue of its position in the table.

Understanding IMS-DL/I Essentials : IMS-DL/I: A Hierarchical Database   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
An IMS-DL/I database is a large, centralized collection of information comprising one or more physical files that can be accessed by the SAS/ACCESS interface to IMS-DL/I. An IMS-DL/I database is a hierarchical database: one where information is structured in records that are subdivided into a hierarchy of related segments.
Ideally, information in the database records is subdivided into segments and fields on some logical basis, either by the inherent structure of the data or by consideration of the uses to which the data will be put.
You can think of a hierarchical database as one that starts at the top with general information about the item, individual, or case.
