Hieroglyphs are a system of writing used by the Ancient Egyptians, using a combination of logographic, syllabic, and alphabetic elements.
Hieroglyphics consisted of three kinds of characters: phonetic characters, including single-sound characters, like an alphabet, but also many representing one or more syllables, ideographs, representing a word, and determinatives, which indicate the semantic category of a spelled-out word without indicating its precise meaning.

Hieroglyphs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The word hieroglyph derives from the Greek words ἱερός (hierós 'sacred') and γλύφειν (glúphein 'to carve' or 'to write', see glyph), and was first used to describe Egyptian hieroglyphs.
The Greeks who came to Egypt prior to and during the Ptolemaic Period (305 BC - 30 BC) observed that while demotic script was employed for secular documents, pictorial characters were frequently found in religious contexts - carved on temple walls and funerary structures, as well as on official monuments.
While the adjective "hieroglyphics" is today still used by some as a noun and can add a humorous and informal tone to remarks about the unreadability of a person's handwriting, this practice is technically incorrect.

Determinative hieroglyphs are therefore used to complement the phonetic hieroglyphic alphabet.
Since a phonetic hieroglyphic word can mean different things, using a determinative hieroglyph after the word would provide the context and narrow down the choices.
For example, if the determinative hieroglyph of the scroll (which represents knowledge) is used, the word before it would be related to knowledge, and can thus be easily identified.

The first appearance of hieroglyphs is found before the writing of the Sumerian cuneiform was developed.
Hieroglyphics consisted of three kinds of characters: an alphabet supplemented by characters representing more than one letter, ideographs, and determinatives, which indicate the semantic category of a spelled-out word without indicating its precise meaning.
The most significant work on deciphering the hieroglyphs was done by Thomas Young and Jean-François Champollion beginning the very early 1800s.

All attempts to decipher the hieroglyphic inscriptions before 1800 were totally unsuccessful because the pictures were believed to be composed of mystic symbols.
Hieroglyphs could be written either right to left, or left to right, or top to down; the lines being either vertical (reading down) or horizontal (reading across).

“The hieroglyph of truth in the animal kingdom is the giraffe.
Since the characteristic of truth is to surmount error, the animal that represents it must be able to raise his head higher than all the others: this the giraffe can do, as it browses on branches 18 feet above the ground.
Truth is also most fine, but as it is incapable of harmonising with our customs, its hieroglyph, the giraffe, must be incapable of helping humans in their work; thus God has reduced it to insignificance by giving it an irregular gait which shakes up and damages any burden it might be called upon to bear.
