Beginning in the 1970s, Japanese cities experienced a massive wave of expansion aslaborers began migrating from rural areas, and Tokyo was one of the most dramaticexamples.
The construction boom of the bubble years was one of the greatest in world history (as judged by thelevel of building expenditures in relation to the size of the economy), leading Tokyo to have an enormously more modern capitalstock of buildings than similar metropolises such as London and New York City.
On March 20, 1995, Tokyo became the focusof international media attention in the wake of the Aum Shinrikyo cultterrorist organisation attack with Sarin nerve gas on the Tokyo subway system (in the tunnels beneath thepolitical district of central Tokyo) in which 12 people were killed and thousands affected (see Sarin gas attack on the Tokyosubway).

At this time the second stage of experiments began, including: computer control of several vehicles, operations for passenger service at stations, control of automatic loading and unloading of freight containers, lane changing experiments and overtaking of vehicles at high speed.
Phase I of the Higashimurayama project was extended through the spring of 1976.

Ott Elementary recently hosted some awesome visitors in the Kids’ Safari program.
In June, the Ott Child and Family Learning Centers invited the Japanese sister city exchange students from Higashimurayama to visit the school site during its “Around the World” week.
Ten students with one teacher came and shared their culture and language with the children in the Kids’ Safari program.
