After carefully studying bone structures of litters produced from one of these wild dogs that was captured in the Ooto Mountains, Dr.
Kazuyoshi Murakami, who taught at the junior high school in Nakatsu Village, Kozamachi in the district of Higashimuro in the prefecture of Wakayama, caught a wild male dog in the Ooto Mountains.
This dog was fierce and had a coat with thin stripes (shima), and thus named the "Shimayamainu" ("Striped mountain dog").
