This battery was designed so that the guns could be fired at a high angle their shells plunging onto the vulnerable decks of attacking warships whose sides were protected by thick armour.
The High Angle Battery at Portland is both an integral part of the defences of the Fortress of Portland when they were at their greatest extent and the best preserved example of this type of Battery in the United Kingdom.
The provision of a battery of four high angle guns for the Verne Citadel was confirmed, the guns to be the MarkVI 9 inch.

The shells and cartridges were brought to the muzzles of the guns, at their loading angle of 30 degrees, by the use of a ramp and davits; a narrowgauge railway ran around the edge of the emplacement to receive the shells from the davit and transport them to the muzzle.
By 1895 Verne Quarry Battery currently mounted 3 high angle guns in the four emplacements and a total of 6 were proposed, an addition of 2 to the original establishment.
The Battery was reconstructed in 1898 (again, the only evidence for this is a date-stone on the war shelter between the two original pairs of guns) and four new emplacements were constructed between the original ones.

Patent 4102638: Apparatus for burning together lead storage battery posts and high profile bushings
In forming a completed battery terminal, high profile lead bushings are placed into an injection molded battery cover, the bushings and lead post over which the bushing fits protruding upward for a substantial length.
In high profile bushings then, it is very difficult to accomplish complete fusion since the molten lead acts as an insulating layer when it freezes, preventing further fusion of the post to the bushing.
This patent describes storage batteries "provided with a number of cells having upstanding terminal posts to which connectors are applied." The adjoining cells are connected by cross connectors which are lead burned to the terminal posts.

A local welding shop fabricated the battery enclosure for us.  The tray was made out of a single sheet of heavy gauge steel.  Across the top, a piece of angle iron was used to drape over the frame rail in order to support the bulk of the weight.
Two uprights were added and designed to set on top of the two crossmembers in-between which it is located.  This ensures that the crossmembers are actually supporting the weight as opposed to relying on a couple of bolts, even if they are grade 8.
The cover is made out of a lighter gauge piece of steel.  It has an upward curved lip that has two holes which slide over the two pegs welded in the angle iron.  The lower portion of the cover is secured by rubber mounts like those found on the hoods of school busses.
