High church - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Today, a source of continuing division between "High Church" Anglo-Catholicism and the Roman Catholic Church itself is the attitude taken by some liberals in the Anglican Communion regarding practices which to orthodox Roman Catholic teaching are strictly anathema, such as the ordination of women, and, increasingly, acceptance and ordination of openly lesbian and gay people.
In the wake of the disestablishment of Anglicanism and the persecution of Anglican beliefs and practices under the Commonwealth, the return of the Anglican party to power in the Cavalier Parliament saw a strong revival of the "High Church" position in the English body politic.

Addleshaw - The High Church Tradition - Chapter 2   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The sixteenth-century Anglican reformers, in contrast to their opposite numbers on the continent, were mercifully deficient in ideas and had little taste for speculative theology.
The High Church divines of the seventeenth century set out to restore the grandeur of Christian truth, and teach it anew to their countrymen who had largely forgotten it in the turmoil of the Reformation.
Thorndike exercised a great influence amongst High Churchmen at the end of the seventeenth and the beginning of the eighteenth century; the liturgy of the Non-jurors and the eighteenth-century Scottish Communion Office are the practical outcome of his views.

Vancouver Sun report on ACiNW   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The high-level Anglican visitors from Asia, Africa and the U.S. were coy, however, about whether they would ultimately back the efforts of a breakaway group of local Anglicans to bring in a so-called "flying bishop," who would operate an alternative diocese separate from Bishop Michael Ingham.
This summer's showdown between conservative and liberal Anglicans in Greater Vancouver was ignited when delegates to the diocese's annual meeting voted in June, for the third time, to bless committed relationships between homosexuals.
While some other Anglican dioceses in the U.S. have indirectly okayed same-sex blessings, the Vancouver decision marks the first time in the global Anglican Church the process was done openly and formally.

The Difference Between Low Church and High Church
From Webster's Dictionary: "Low Church (1710) tending esp. in Anglican worship to minimize emphasis on the priesthood, sacraments, and the ceremonial in worship and often to emphasize evangelical principles." By contrast: "High Church (1687) tending esp. in Anglican worship to stress the sacerdotal [priestly], liturgical, ceremonial, traditional, and Catholic elements in worship."
While the Anglican tradition, along with Lutherans and other Protestant tradition, tended to gravitate to “high church” forms of worship, even within those traditions the influence of “low church” approaches came to be felt.
This seems to be an attempt to reintegrate the two dimensions of a concern with the sacramental and liturgical that is a part of Anglican and Wesleyan heritage with the evangelical emphasis that is also a crucial part of that identity.

The republication of Anglican divines, from Andrewes onwards, likewise owed its inception to Pusey.
The condemnation of Anglican Orders by Pope Leo XIII in the Bull "Apostolicae Curae", 13 September, 1896, shuts out the hope entertained by some of what was termed "corporate reunion", even if it had ever been possible, which Newman did not believe.

It houses the cathedra or throne of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and is the mother church of the Diocese of Canterbury (east Kent) and the Church of England, and the focus for the Anglican Communion.
Its constitution affirms many relatively conservative theological beliefs, its liturgical form of worship is traditional, and its organisation embodies a belief in the appropriateness of the historical episcopal hierarchy of archbishops, bishops, and dioceses.
The Anglican Communion uses the compass rose as its symbol, signifying its worldwide reach and decentralized nature.

The concept of Anglo-Catholicism as a distinct sub-group or branch of Anglicanism, however, began to come to prominence in the Church of England during the Victorian era under the influence of the Oxford Movement or "Tractarians".
In the Anglican Communion three terms are frequently — but not always correctly — used to denote the parish's style of worship: High Church, Low Church, and Broad Church (or Latitudinarian).
This ethos, peculiar to Anglicanism, was championed by the Elizabethan divine, Richard Hooker.

 Sacerdotalism - Theopedia
The Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and high Anglican traditions are sacerdotal.
Although the priests are not supposed to be seen as better or more godly than others, their role in the sacraments of the church give them a special "mediatorial" role, as representatives of the Church (Christ's body on earth) and thus of Christ.
In Protestantism, if we except high Anglicans, there are no earthly "mediators," because each believer has the Holy Spirit in them.

Peter B. Nockles's, The Oxford Movement in Context: Anglican High Churchmanship, 1760-1857 (Cambridge 1994), is a must read for any Anglican interested in the High Church and Catholic strains of the Church of England and progeny.
For those Anglicans that have forgotten the Daily Office and its lectionary, please reintroduce your self to it, or at least engage in a regular study and reading of the Scripture, the central virtue of the Office.
On the other hand, the Patristic Anglican's main quibbles are (1) that the Bishop avoids discussing an theory of Atonement at all, and (2) that he seems to assume that certain Counter-Reformation developments and practices, e.g., communion under one species, are part and parcel to the patristic faith and practice.

 The Church of England
When Elizabeth I succeeded to the throne in 1558, however, she restored a moderate Protestantism, codifying the Anglican faith in the Act of Uniformity, the Act of Supremacy, and the Thirty-Nine Articles.
From the time of the Elizabethan settlement on, the Church of England (the Anglican Church) attempted, with varying degrees of success, to consolidate its position both as a distinctive middle way between Catholicism and Puritanism and as the national religion of England.
This process was facilitated to a considerable degree in part because many upper-class Anglicans, tired of doctrinal disputes, wanted only a rational, moderate, practical religion which would permit them to worship in peace.

There were exactly 90 Tracts, the majority written by Newman, arguing in general that the truth of the doctrines of the Church of England rested on the modern church's position as the direct descendant of the church established by the Apostles.
Pretty obviously, such an argument was a conservative answer to the various contemporary challenges to the authority of religion in general, Christianity in particular, and specifically Anglicanism Catholicism, fueled by the same need for reassurance as was the Evangelical revival.
