High cross - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A High Cross is a standing cross with a circle, made of stone and often richly ornamented.
The High Crosses were status symbols, either for a monastery or for a sponsor or patron.
The early 8th century crosses had only geometric motifs, but from the 9th and 10th century, biblical scenes were carved on the crosses.

Florilegium urbanum - Physical fabric - Public works
At Leicester, the High Cross was placed at the crossroads of the High Street, which ran between the North and South gates, and the streets leading from the East and West Gates.
This was the commercial centre of the medieval town, and the High Street was one of the foci for population; several inns were clustered in the stretch in the vicinity of the cross.
Some of the work required on the cross in 1313 appears to have been carried out by the townsmen on either a voluntary or conscription basis; they were not compensated for their labour, but the authorities provided refreshments.

Sproxton Cross Commentary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
When the cross was taken down the socket within which the shaft stood was, however, left in situ in Sproxton churchyard, and it is illustrated in its own right in John Nichols’ ‘History and Antiquities of the County of Leicester’ (1794).
The Chi-Rho was adopted by the Roman Emperor Constantine in 312 A.D., and is known as the ‘Labarum of Constantine’ by the Church of Rome.
The Sproxton Cross is often ignorantly referred to as a Saxon cross, but in both style and form it is in fact Anglo-Norse, belonging to the Jellinge style of Scandinavian art which flourished in the 10th century.

The movement for founding a similar society in Leicestershire may be said to date from 16 May 1854, when the Architectural Societies of the Diocese of Lincoln and of the Archdeaconry of Northampton (dine tides precisely indicate the ecclesiastical bent of the two bodies) held a joint meeting in Leicester.
Twelve years later, when the Leicestershire Archaeological Society began to print its own Transactions, Poole's paper was included at the front of the first volume, so marking the contribution made by this meeting to the Society's foundation.
Hamilton Thompson published in it a characteristic paper on the monasteries of Leicestershire in the fifteenth century and then, in two installments, his edition of the building-accounts of Kirby Muxloe Castle (1480-84) This is probably the most widely known contribution that has ever appeared in these Transactions.
