MyJewishLearning.com - Holidays: Overview: The High Holiday Perio
Although the High Holidays themselves--the two days of Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement)--occupy three days only, they lie within a web of liturgy and customs that extend from the beginning of the preceding Hebrew month of Elul through Yom Kippur.
The focus of this entire period is the process of teshuvah, or repentance, whereby a Jew admits to sins, asks for forgiveness, and resolves not to repeat the sins.
The culmination of the High Holiday period occurs during the Ten Days of Repentance, which begin on 1 Tishri with Rosh Hashanah and end with Yom Kippur.

Although Hanukkah and Passover often get more press, possibly because of their proximity to widely-celebrated Christian holidays, Rosh Hashana and successive Yom Kippur are considered more important by many religious Jews, said Rabbi Garson Herzfeld of Winchester’s Beth El Congregation.
Though Jews honor the holidays by attending services and preparing meals at home, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur are not exactly festive holidays.
Non-Jews can show respect for the holidays by being aware their Jewish friends have certain religious priorities during Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, Herzfeld said.

So, while the High Holidays mean so much more than just food, I believe that the relevancy of these ancient holidays lies in the purposeful meaning that each of us experiences during these holy times.
