Visited by thousands of birders during a brief season, High Island provided a unique opportunity to quantify birding’s economic impact at a single location.
Local residents (those residing in the five counties surrounding High Island, including Houston in Harris County) constituted 42.4 percent of High Island’s visitors; 57.6 percent were non-residents from 35 states (including Texas) and five foreign countries.
High Island and other birding locales are not independent of the social and economic fabric of their communities.

High Island is the only place I've ever encountered grandstands for birding.
High Island is not really an island in the sense we usually think of islands -- it's a raised bit of ground in a sea of marshland, and the only place for many miles in all directions that actually supports trees.
One good aspect of being in High Island with a south wind is that you know the warblers are having an easy journey -- and that fall migration should be robust.

HIGH ISLAND, Texas - Making an encore appearance in the Gulf of Mexico as a tropical storm, Ivan swirled toward the Texas coast Thursday with a potential for up to 10 inches of rain over the weekend.
Ivan was expected to make a button-hook turn and sit over Houston and the rest of southeastern Texas through the weekend, bringing 4 to 10 inches of rain and the threat of flooding.
The last time the Houston area had a tropical storm was June 2001, when Allison hit and then looped back, dropping 36 inches of rain, killing 22 people and paralyzing the nation's fourth-largest city.

 Texas birding holiday
Although we were all really looking forward to visiting High Island in anticipation of seeing such stunning species as Chestnut-sided Warbler, Northern Parula and Magnolia Warbler, species that would be difficult to encounter anywhere else in Texas.
A male Western Tanager was a good bird for eastern Texas, other goodies bought in by the weather front was a Whip-poor-will seen very well as it roosted in a dead tree in open sunlight, a Great-crested Flycatcher, Philadelphia and Yellow-throated Vireo, Inca Dove and Swainson’s Thrush.
Our final morning in Texas was spent at Boy Scout Wood, birds seen were similar to the previous day but two Cerulean Warblers performed extremely well and unusually for this species low down in foliage.
