High Magick - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
High Magick is the practice and study of esoteric disciplines specifically designed to complete the Great Work.
All magick that does not have for its aim the completion of the Great Work is "Low" magick.
Low Magick is a pragmatic approach, while 'High' magick is teleological.

 Teachings: Magick, High and Low
High magick, or theurgy, in a different sense refers to magick used to achieve a mystical religious experience where the magician is united with divinity or the godhead.
The separation of the practice of magick from that of science did not occur until the 17th century when scientists began viewing the universe as a complicated machine, such as a clock, rather than as a living organism, as had earlier philosophers and scientists.
Magickal power is also traditionally believed to reside in peoples' secret or magickal names and other "words of power." For this reason these names and magickal incantations need to be kept secret to keep opponents from using them to place curses.

high magick in this latter system arises within what is called the 'twilight' of nondual consciousness (meditation, trance, dream), whereas low magick concerns items on the opposite end of that polar spectrum (to procure food, sex, progeny or wealth).
as in the case of 'fl' and 'white' magick, so 'high' and 'low' have been used in an often biased tone, condemning the 'fl' and the 'low' (as the Church was competing (leading to the condemnation of 'fl') against others within the realm material (leading to the condemnation of 'low')).
In fact, the high magick adept no longer feels any need to produce environmental effects by magick because his or her consciousness is not dependent upon either desire or fear.

And while many assume that magick is the sole dominion of witches and shamans, associating it with the casting of spells and conjuring of demons, magick can be viewed as a naturally-occurring phenomena that has its place in the course of our everyday lives.

Another curious thing about low and high magickal systems, is that in the former, the systems are very close to nature, in the later close to civilization.
The magician who practice high magick soon sees how simple everything is and so becomes closer to nature, the one who practice low magick soon sees how complex everything is and so becomes closer to civilization.
But the real issue here is, that "High Magick", in other words, off-shoots of Hermetic magick is considered more "powerful" by some of it's practitioners because it's the magick of scholarly, "civilized" and sterile atmosphere, while witchcraft and other heathen paths have traditionally been intuitive, "uncivilized" and bloody as hell.

I think that proceeds from an outmoded paradigm of Ptolemaic, geocentric cosmology, in which Terra sits within a batch of rotating concentric spheres, She being the 'lowest' while the uppermost is the most 'divine' or 'spiritual'.
the inversion goes something like this: 'low' magick is more connected to the divine (material) realm, whereas 'high' magick centers on the ravings and obsessions with figments of imagination seeded by star-demons aeons ago to enslave the human race to their chieftain Jehovah.
