High Plains Drifter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
High Plains Drifter is a 1973 Western film starring and directed by Clint Eastwood, wherein he plays a character clearly influenced by the Man with No Name from Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars and its sequels.
High Plains Drifter has a much quicker pace, however, which also indicates the stylistic influence of Eastwood's other mentor, Don Siegel (in fact, Eastwood has noted that the graveyard set featured in the film's finale had tombstones reading "Sergio Leone" and "Don Siegel," intended as a comical "dedication" to both then-living directors).
Filmed on location on the shores of Mono Lake, California, High Plains Drifter is morally complex in the manner of the spaghetti westerns, and introduces the environmental themes that were to appear in a number of Eastwood's later movies.

I concede that High Plains Drifter is probably more of a mystical Western than a Western-based horror film but the proficiency of its supernatural foundations are such that it more than merits a mention here.
Drifter uses its setting to tremendous effect, with the Stranger’s haunting entrance and departure rivalling those of better known visual treats like Laurence of Arabia.
Combined with fine performances from the main protagonists and a script which provides more than enough momentum to compensate for the sedate pace of the action, High Plains Drifter is a mystical and haunting film which provides a model for those seeking to cast conventional myths and legends in an unconventional setting.
