One reason for the tremendous growth of paintball is the increasing use of high pressure compressed air instead of carbon dioxide (CO2) or nitrogen (N2).
Pure, dry, high pressure compressed air at pressures of 3000 to 5000 psig is the safest and least expensive propellant medium for markers, and it’s environmentally friendly.
Air is a mixture of gases containing, by volume, approximately 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen with the remaining 1% consisting of trace amounts of several other gases.

WARPIG - World And Regional Paintball Information Guide
The AIR is able to measure the amount of gas used with each shot (this works for any paintgun, not just an Angel) and compare that to the tank pressure to calculate an estimate of how many shots are left in the tank.
Inspecting the main seal, piston and spring pack does not require removing the AIR from the bottle, but it is a good idea to have the two separated during work on the AIR, to avoid the possibility of trapped air pressure.
The filter cleans the air that is going into the tank, keeping debris out of both the tank, and the regulator, but it is no excuse for not using the fill nipple cover and keeping air hoses as clean as possible.

Paintball Power Source - CO2 and HPA
As the liquid CO2 is converted to gas to propel the paintball from your gun, the high pressure of the CO2 inside the tank expands to the lower pressure inside your marker, causing your gun’s velocity to fluctuate or ‘spike’ dramatically.
controls the gas pressure that is released from the tank to ensure that a more consistent air pressure is fed to the gun.
High pressure air is expected to become more readily available to paintballers in the future; however, the price still may never be as low as CO2.

Pascal (unit) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The pascal (symbol: Pa) is the SI derived unit of pressure or stress (also: Young's modulus and tensile strength).
Therefore, meteorologists use hectopascals (hPa) today for air pressure, which are equivalent to millibars, while similar pressures are given in kilopascals in practically all other fields, where the hecto prefix is hardly ever used.
In the former Soviet mts system, the unit of pressure is the pieze, which is equal to one kilopascal.

Compressed Air Specialties, Inc. - www.paintballcompressor.com
The only difference between the air used by firefighters/scuba divers and the air used by paintballers is that the air for firefighters/scuba divers must be purified to breathing air standards.
This air must still be cleansed of all oil, particulates, and most moisture so that it is not passed into the paintball air system and clog up the regulator.
The only difference between high pressure air and nitrogen is mainly how they are derived and how one would actually refill a paintball air system.

WARPIG - World And Regional Paintball Information Guide
A regulator is a devise that regulates the pressure of the air entering a paintball gun it accomplishes this by cutting off the air source when the pressure in the regulator’s chamber reaches a certain pressure.
The pressure in the chamber causes the spring pack to compress, moving the piston a distance proportional to the pressure in the chamber.
The pressure relief is a small hole or some other type of system designed to allow air to escape in the regulator body placed so if enough pressure compresses the spring pack then the seal on the piston will clear the small hole and vent gas out of the regulator.

Pressure System There are two basic kinds of paintball pressure systems, or propellant sources available for use with paintball guns.
Small pressure bottles, holding 12-grams of gas were available for use with BB and pellet guns and were adopted for use with paintball guns.
Unlike carbon dioxide, air (or nitrogen) exist only as a gas at the pressure we use it for in paintball.

The first was low pressure guns, these systems claimed more range and better accuracy because of the different arc of the ball.
Paintballs became smaller and heavier which let them fly further at the same speed, and hurt more too.
Air system technology will increase the operating pressure to 6000PSI with 68ci systems yielding 2500+ shots per tank on the newest low pressure guns.

Which paintball tank do I want for my gun?
The pressure is basically generated as the CO2 goes through a state change from a liquid to a gas.
Fortunately, enough of the better paintball fields realize that today's players demand the benefits of compressed air, (also known as HPA - high pressure air) so they have taken the steps and expense to install equipment for filling these bottles.
With Air, you have a regulator built onto the tank - if you tried to run 3000 psi straight into the gun - you'd blow the o-rings apart - but with the regulator built in - it takes care of the pressure and delivers it at a consistent, constant pressure.

It is non-flammable breathable air under high pressure, which is normally used in SCUBA diving.
In contrast, the air pressure of HPA remains constant regardless of temperature and volume of air demanded.
Sure you can set the pressure and remove the gauge to save weight, but if your regulator psi knob gets bumped or loosened at the event, you will have no idea what your output pressure is, and if it's too high, you could blow your fittings and lose all your air.

Lower input pressures will reduce the reactive trigger and may cause slight shoot down on rapid fire, but the RT will be more consistent over the chronograph when fired slowly.
