	EUROPA - Glossary - High Representative for the CFSP (Mr/Ms CFSP)
		A new position of High Representative for the common foreign and security policy (CFSP) was created by the Treaty of Amsterdam (adopted in 1997).
		The post is held by the Secretary-General of the Council, whose task is to assist the presidency of the Union in matters relating to the common foreign and security policy.
		The High Representative aims to allow the Union to express itself with greater visibility and coherence on the international stage by giving it a more recognisable face and voice.

		The EU's ambition to play a role worthy of note on the international stage was a reaction to the disenchantment which arose from the EU's inability to react to conflicts as geographically close as the war in the Balkans.
		The creation of the office of the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy was the first crucial and visible step in the launching of a genuine foreign policy.
		Meanwhile, the major focus of the EU's foreign policy will be to continue to provide financial and technical support in regions where there is conflict or where there are threats to world stability, peace and prosperity.
