| | Auckland City Libraries: High Society by Ben Elton (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07) |
 | | With Dead famous, his previous book, Elton examined the reality TV genre, and in High society he looks at what might happen if a British MP, Peter Paget, were to propose a bill to legalise all recreational drugs. |
 | | The novel is peppered with persuasive speeches and ruminations in favour of this view, and, because this is a work of fiction, Elton doesn’t feel the compulsion for balance that other forums might require. |
 | | The main characters of High society are well drawn, and witty, from the MP and his family, who are at the epicentre of the debate, to Tommy Hanson, a rock star cast from the Robbie Williams’ mould, and Jessie, a homeless teenager who lives in the criminal world so many of us never see. |
