 Howstuffworks "How Maglev Trains Work"
The big difference between a maglev train and a conventional train is that maglev trains do not have an engine -- at least not the kind of engine used to pull typical train cars along steel tracks.
Once the train is levitated, power is supplied to the coils within the guideway walls to create a unique system of magnetic fields that pull and push the train along the guideway.
Electromagnets attached to the train's undercarriage are directed up toward the guideway, which levitates the train about 1/3 of an inch (1 cm) above the guideway and keeps the train levitated even when it's not moving.

High-speed rail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The world speed record for a conventional wheeled train was set in 1990 by a French TGV that reached a speed of 515.3 km/h (320.2 mph), and a Japanese magnetic levitation train (maglev) JR-Maglev MLX01 in development has reached 581 km/h (361 mph).
Later high speed rail lines, such as the LGV Atlantique, the LGV Est, and most high speed lines in Germany, were designed as feeder routes branching into conventional rail lines, serving a larger number of medium-sized cities.
These trains are currently limited to a top speed of 125 mph (200 km/h) although they were designed to run faster—cost over-runs on the track and signalling refurbishment project led to the line being rebuilt with the lower speed limit rather than the 140 mph (225 km/h) originally planned.

Guilford, owner of the 78 miles of railroad between Portland and Plaistow, would like the train to run at 59 mph, a speed it feels is safest due to the condition of the tracks.
Much speculation about the nature of Friday's train ride was caused by the fact that the demonstration was a "media only" trip and no other state or rail officials were invited to ride the train.
While the 50-year-old Guilford train used in the demonstration was not one of the actual Amtrak trains that will provide the service, it aptly illustrated just how fast 59 mph is compared to the much slower freight trains that currently run along the tracks.
