With the advent of the spark plug and battery operated "buzz coils", high tension magnetos came into being to eliminate batteries and feed the higher voltage needed to overcome the open spark plug's high resistance gap.
High tension magnetos also use capacitors (condensers) across their "external points" because sparking is now undesirable as it causes unnecessary wear and tear on the point surfaces.

 Movie Review - High Tension
After hearing from certain critic and fan circles that High Tension was the horror film of the year, my interest was certainly peaked.
The problem with High Tension isn’t the acting or in the premise, but in the unbelievably silly and stupid plot twist that hits you over the head like a sledgehammer about 3⁄4 of the way into the flick.
High Tension however, seems to be using it as a gimmick, and no amount of explaining can make up for the gigantic plot holes that the twist creates in the overall film.

To put it bluntly, High Tension is the girl who had a sex change and left you fuming.
The movie was looking at 3.5 marks for a while, but I'm dropping it to 2 marks in an effort to make people understand that if you want to manipulate your audience, then you at least better make the payoff worth it.

Not even a free screener copy could inspire any other DVD critic on our staff to review this picture, which is even more reason for the low marks I have given the film in the past, and am about to give the movie again.
The thriller tells the story of a girl, Marie, whose holiday break at a friends house is interrupted by a killer who invades the home, kills most of the friends family, and kidnaps the friend.
High Tension remains firmly among my least favorite films this year, a status not repaired by the movie’s DVD release.
