  Salon: Litchat with Nick Hornby
"High Fidelity" (Riverhead), the popular first novel by British author Nick Hornby, is like reading from an old diary -- at once hilarious and pathetic, the stories of romantic engagements and disengagements are often an embarrassing reminder of who you once were.
But Hornby claims he isn't much like the main character in "High Fidelity," the hapless record store owner Rob Fleming, who is still struggling to grow up at 35.
Irvine Welsh is hip for all sorts of reasons, but with "High Fidelity" I can't see it really, apart from that it has some rock and roll in it.

High Fidelity is directed by Stephen Frears (The High-Lo Country, Dangerous Liaisons) and is written for the screen by D.V. DeVincentis, Steve Pink, Scott Rosenberg and John Cusack, from the novel by Nick Hornby.
High Fidelity offers a comedic look at its heartbroken main character and narrator, whose recent breakup forces him to rethink his previous failed romances and to confront the fear of commitment.
High Fidelity offers a strictly male point of view by depicting a world where every male character --troubled or not-- is nonetheless a funny character, and where all female characters are either too angered, too hurt or too indifferent, yet always serious.

 High Fidelity
Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity is a three-minute pop song of a novel — or rather, it’s like the songs musicians start to write when they feel they’ve "outgrown" pop music: a minor chord here, an unrhymed lyric there, but underneath it’s still boy-loves-girl.
Rob, High Fidelity’s record store-owning protagonist, is a stereotypical commitment-phobe in his mid-30s, a character as thin as Maxim’s paper stock.
There’s nothing in High Fidelity to rival the moment in Say Anything… when Cusack launched a million high school crushes by wooing Ione Skye with "In Your Eyes"; Rob may be in love with music, but High Fidelity isn’t.

Taken together, Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's Diary and Nick Hornby's High Fidelity provide the most clearly drawn map of the murky terrain of gender at the turn of the millennium as we are likely to receive.
Rather, it was Hornby's now-familiar blend of infectious humor, unpretentious intellect, and genuine heart that made High Fidelity an instant classic and Hornby himself one of the most popular literary writers of his generation.

SPLICEDwire | "High Fidelity" review (2001) Stephen Frears, John Cusack, Iben Hjejle, Jack Black
John Cusack plays the bitterness of being dumped with droll aplomb in "High Fidelity," an observant and acerbic dark comedy in which he is our overly-reflective tour guide through the farcical misery of a bad breakup.
Directed by Stephen Frears ("Dangerous Liaisons," "The Snapper") with wall-to-wall wry, observational wit and fantastic attention to detail, "High Fidelity" is in many ways a mature and more accomplished extension of Cusack's teen comedies of the 1980s.
"High Fidelity" may be dated by its music and setting, but it will stand the test of time because it captures this generation's most common relationship foibles so amusingly.

When a book develops a pop-culture following the way Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity" did, you can bet there are going to be thousands of people out there holding their breath, hoping that the movie version will somehow measure up to the source material.
And besides that, "High Fidelity," like the book it's based on, is essentially a story about the overwhelming power of pop culture -- not just the way it can illuminate every element of our existence but also the way it can cloud our judgment.
"High Fidelity" is less a story with a real plot than a snapshot of that hazy, miserable time just after a breakup, when things are horrible, when you realize that everything about you needs to be reassessed and when, if you're that kind of person, you need to play a lot of records.

Transplanted from England to the not-so-mean streets of Chicago, the screen adaptation of Nick Hornby's cult-classic novel High Fidelity emerges unscathed from its Americanisation, idiosyncrasies intact, thanks to John Cusack's inimitable charm and a nimble, nifty screenplay (co-written by Cusack).
Low on plot and high on self-discovery, High Fidelity takes a good 30 minutes or so to find its groove (not unlike Cusack's Grosse Pointe Blank), but once it does, it settles into it comfortably and builds a surprisingly touching momentum.

The introspective story of a vinyl junkie whose pattern of being rejected by women reflects a failure to channel his passion for music into other areas of his life, Nick Hornby's funny and insightful 1995 novel was just never meant to be a Broadway musical.
While its London specificity was almost as central to "High Fidelity" as its observations on guyness, the novel translated with integrity, wit and a good share of its idiosyncratic detail intact to a Chicago setting in Stephen Frears' film.
This bland show is crippled by its failure to convincingly tap the pulse of pop culture or to mine the romantic heartache of its source material.

“High Fidelity.” And if I close my eyes and concentrate really hard, I just might be able to describe a show that erases itself from your memory even as you watch it.
The latest Broadway songfest to trade on fond associations generated by a popular movie (in this case Stephen Frears’s 2000 film of the same title, adapted from Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel), “High Fidelity” is not mean-spirited, sticky sweet, stress-inducing, excessively loud, cutesy or pushy.
It was witty, high in energy, charming, and lacking the corny melodrama that is often associated with Broadway musicals.

Even with all its out-of-town try-out flaws, "High Fidelity" is a musical that celebrates the power of pop culture with wit, verve and a killer beat.
Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire ("Rabbit Hole," "Kimberly Akimbo") ably adapts Hornby's 1996 book and the film to the stage, maintaining the author's humor and loopy specificity with high fidelity of his own while reconfiguring it to the demands of a musical.
The scene with Rob recounting his Top Five break-ups (and revisiting these women later in the story) is nicely compressed into a single song and a follow-up snippet in the second act.
