It is an island at most times, except for being connected to City Island by a permanent (A bar of sand) sandbar that emerges at very (The lowest (farthest) ebb of the tide) low tide.
Access from City Island and the waters is restricted by a large security fence and gate on King Avenue which surrounds the High Island Bridge ramp and roadway and the area in and around the two transmitters.
The island is mostly an outcrop of (Solid unweathered rock lying beneath surface deposits of soil) bedrock with many trees, with a small swamp on its southwest side.
