High school subcultures - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A high school subculture is a group of preteen or adolescent students in a secondary education setting — junior high school, high school — which acts as a subculture.
Middle and high school subcultures which show a systematic opposition to the dominant culture are often seen as countercultures in their schools.
Subcultural theory views this solution as a response on the part of the subcultural group to the fragmentation or loss of status of a parent culture.

Larger schools typically must be subdivided into departments of units, with the consequence that school loyalties and inter-unit cooperation may be affected adversely.
School size research most often refers to the size of the student body, large being 2,000 or more students in secondary environments for instance, while small being a broad range anywhere from 100 to 600 students in elementary and even secondary environments.
The goal of the Memorial High Neighborhoods is through a series of initiatives to close the achievement gap, to create a collegial school culture, to build student leadership and ownership for the future direction of the school, and increase and diversity student participation in extracurricular activities.

Powell determined that independent elementary schools tend to be small while independent high schools tend to be even smaller—in contrast to public schools, which tend to increase in size as the students they serve get older.
Smaller schools promote substantially improved equity in achievement among all students, and smaller schools may be especially important for disadvantaged students.
Some studies conclude that small schools’ operating costs per student are higher than those of large schools, but others find that they cost less per graduate because their graduation rates re higher (Cotton, 1996 and 2001; Lawrence et al., 2005).

Nerd - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Stereotypically, in high school, the more "popular" or more socially adept teens often ridicule and bully those labeled as nerds, who have a reputation of engaging deeply in academic areas.
Thus a "nerd" is primarily marked as having a high intelligence and is not necessarily more fascinated with one subject any more so than another.
Thus a "geek" who was obsessed by the pursuit of mathematical or scientific knowledge, might also be classified as a "nerd" as society considers such pursuits to be intellectual in nature and as requiring high intelligence.

For most respondents heavy alcohol use in high school correlated to later collegiate polydrug use, but among the small subset of those reporting heavy high school use who had received treatment, their collegiate drug use patterns were far more moderate in comparison to their non-treated peers.
In countries having high levels of cannabis use, the use of other drugs was also more common but there were no consistent differences for alcohol.
In all comparisons, students in a "high use" environment (colleges with high proportions of frequent users) showed higher levels of vulnerability to substance use than students in a "low use" environment (low proportions of frequent users).
