High Availability Cluster Overview Volume groups can be defined on disk volumes that are connected to two or more systems in a high availability cluster.
The volume group must be marked as part of a high availability cluster and marked sharable, otherwise, the volume group is not activated.
The volume group must be marked as part of a high availability cluster, and the availability software must be running on the system; otherwise, the volume group is not activated.

 High Availability [Cluster]
For information on how a server cluster implements a high-availability environment, see Server Cluster Implementation.
A highly available resource is available a very high percentage of the time and may even approach 100% availability, but a small percentage of down time is acceptable and expected.
Server clusters are designed to keep resources (such as applications, disks, and file shares) highly available.

IBM Clusters - High Availability Cluster Multiprocessing Best Practices
The IBM High Availability Cluster Multiprocessing (HACMP™) product supports a wide variety of configurations, and provides the cluster administrator with a great deal of flexibility.
This document discusses the choices that the cluster designer can make, and suggests the alternatives that make for the highest level of availability.
With this flexibility comes the responsibility to make wise choices: there are many cluster configurations that are workable in the sense that the cluster will pass verification and come on line, but which are not optimum in terms of providing availability.

 High Availability Cluster Checklist
In a cluster environment, preserving the integrity of the data is of paramount importance and supersedes even data availability.
The diagram in Figure 1 depicts a two-node cluster (I am using a two-node cluster for simplicity, the concepts apply to clusters composed of more than two nodes as well) with cluster members A and B connected to a shared SCSI bus with Disk 1.
The upshot of all this is that the cluster implementation you choose must ensure that an individual file system or database can only be served by a single cluster member at any point in time--pretty simple, if you can find a cluster product that does this in all cases.

 High availability and Heartbeat
Heartbeat arose from the Heart project in 1999 and is one of the foundational technologies of the High Availability Linux Project.
The version of Heartbeat available today is a stable and effective way of ensuring that two nodes in a cluster act in a coordinated manner.
Dependencies, otherwise called "constraints" are important, as you might never want database servers to run on the same node as Web servers, or you might want to always have data replication services run only on nodes that are running the database services.
