High-intensity discharge lamp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
High-intensity discharge (HID) lamps include the types of electrical lights: mercury vapor, metal halide, high-pressure sodium, low-pressure sodium and less common, xenon short-arc lamps.
The light-producing element of these lamp types is a well-stabilized arc discharge contained within a refractory envelope (arc tube) with wall loading in excess of 3 W/cm² (19.4 W/in.²).
HID lamps are typically used when high levels of light over large areas are required, and when energy efficiency and/or long life are desired.

Leakage inductance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Usually, leakage inductance is an undesirable property, but it is sometimes deliberately introduced into a transformer used as a ballast for a gas discharge lamp such as a neon sign, fluorescent lamp, or a high-intensity discharge lamp.
Without the leakage inductance, the negative resistance characteristic of these gas discharge lamps would cause them to conduct excessive current and be destroyed.
The leakage flux alternately stores and discharges magnetic energy with each electrical cycle and thus effectively acts as an inductor in series in each of the primary and secondary circuits.

Gas Discharge Lamps, Ballasts, and Fixtures
Nasty chemicals: Various toxic substances may be present inside high pressure discharge lamps (sodium and mercury) and neon signs (some phosphors).
Fluorescent lamps are a special class of gas discharge lamps where the electric current produces mostly invisible UV light which is turned into visible light by a special phosphor coating on the interior of the tube.
High pressure sodium lamps are roughly twice as efficient as fluorescent lamps.

 high-intensity discharge lamp
High-intensity discharge (HID) lamps provide the highest efficacy and longest service life of any lighting type.
Because of the intense light they produce at a high efficacy, HID lamps are commonly used for outdoor lighting and in large indoor arenas.
Since the lamps take awhile to establish, they are most suitable for applications where they stay on for hours at a time.

The 2006-2011 World Outlook for High Intensity Discharge Lamp Ballast Transformers - Market Research Report
It is for this definition of high intensity discharge lamp ballast transformers that the aggregate latent demand estimates are derived.
Based on the aggregate view of high intensity discharge lamp ballast transformers as defined above, data were then collected for as many similar countries as possible for that same definition, at the same level of the value chain.
Depending on original data sources used, the definition of “high intensity discharge lamp ballast transformers” is established.

(57) A high intensity discharge lamp constructed with a tubular envelope composed of single crystal sapphire (100) in which a continuous non-flash arc is created across multiple electrodes (207, 209) to generate a radiation emitting plasma.
The lamp may operate at higher temperatures and pressures than conventional high intensity discharge lamps to produce greater luminance at any given power output.
The lamp is a small powerful light source, has a longer effective life, and maintains a selected color temperature over the live of the lamp.

Plant Engineering: High-intensity discharge lamp update.@ HighBeam Research
High-intensity discharge (HID) lamps derive their designation from the fact that they concentrate a lot of light in small package, approaching a point source of light.
Plant Engineering: High-intensity discharge lamp update.@ HighBeam Research
The high light output of HID lamps permits fewer luminaires to illuminate larger areas, and their intense, point-source emission characteristics permits better optical control and more efficient luminaire design.

Disposal of Fluorescent Light Tubes, High Intensity Discharge Lamps and Flourescent Lamp Ballasts
Fluorescent light tubes and lamp ballasts, and high intensity discharge (HID) lamps are found throughout our environment in residences, office buildings, commercial and industrial buildings, streets, and parking lots.
Lamps generated as household waste are exempt from regulation as hazardous waste.
However, once the waste containing the fluorescent light tubes and HID lamps is declared hazardous, it must be handled as such with all the accompanying regulations and procedures.

RECYCLING FLUORESCENT LIGHT TUBES AND HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE LAMPS
The recycling of fluorescent lights and high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps is a proven technology capable of reliably recovering greater than 99% of the mercury in the spent lights.
Fluorescent lights and HID lamps have traditionally had one important drawback: relatively high environmental costs associated with their use, specifically, the disposal costs.
EPA's primary objective in designating hazardous waste lamps as a universal waste is to minimize releases of mercury to the environment, ensure safe handling of the lamps, and to keep the lamps out of landfills.
