High Speed Train - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The HST was the first high speed train in Britain: that is, the first train to travel at 125 mph (200 km/h).
The HST was introduced in the late 1970s by British Rail, at a time when the maximum speed of British trains was 100 mph (160 km/h).
The train operates scheduled services at a maximum speed of 125 mph (200 km/h).

High-speed rail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The earliest high-speed train deployed in Europe was the Italian "Direttissima" that connected Rome with Florence (254 km) in 1978.
The world speed record for a conventional wheeled train was set in 1990 by a French TGV that reached a speed of 515,3 km/h (320,2 mph), and an experimental Japanese magnetic levitation train (maglev) JR-Maglev MLX01 has reached 581 km/h (361 mph).
These trains are currently limited to a top speed of 125 mph (200 km/h) although they were designed to run faster—cost over-runs on the track and signalling refurbishment project led to the line being rebuilt with the lower speed limit rather than the 140 mph (225 km/h) originally planned.

Calculation of High-Speed Train Aerodynamic Loads
In a study for the US Department of Transportation, we calculated the unsteady dynamic loads created when a high speed passenger train traveling at speeds up to 150 mph (241 km/hr) passes a slower freight carrying shipping containers and traveling at speeds up to 50 mph (80 km/hr) using the Acusolve finite element software.
A series of calculations were used to explore the effects of train geometry and speed as well as the effects of ambient wind speed and direction.
The large scale dynamic CFD calculations illustrated in the passing train problem can be applied to related problems including the passing of highway vehicles, the dynamic pressures generated by fan blades, and vortex shedding in marine and other environments.

 CNN - High-speed train crash kills 100 in Germany - June 3, 1998
Rescuers and emergency teams said the InterCity Express (ICE) train, en route from Hanover to the port city of Hamburg, was traveling about 200 km/h (125 mph) when it crashed into a car that apparently had fallen onto the rail tracks in the small village of Eschede.
The nose of the train cleared the bridge, while the other coaches were telescoped into one another as the train slammed into the bridge, which collapsed and fell onto the train wreck.

 Howstuffworks "How Maglev Trains Work"
Traveling at speeds of up to 310 mph (500 kph), maglev trains could begin connecting distant cities in a few years.
Maglev is short for magnetic levitation, which means that these trains will float over a guideway using the basic principles of magnets to replace the old steel wheel and track trains.
However, there is a new form of transportation on the horizon that could possibly revolutionize transportation of the 21st century the way airplanes did in the 20th century.

Circulating at 250-270 km per hour, the new, specially adapted regional trains run almost as fast as Spain’s very high speed AVE trains, with whom they share the infrastructure, but are only half its length and require half the energy, thus optimizing operating costs.
In answer to a rising market demand for high-speed passenger trains capable of operating on both standard lines and newly built high speed lines, ALSTOM has developed a new generation of non-tilting electric trains for high speed operations between 200 - 270 km per hour.
The first train was delivered to Renfe workshops in Toledo in February 2003, later than the initial date at the customer’s request, in order to equip it for new European-wide signalization norms aimed at standardizing train operations.
