Two letters bearing the wellknown superscription Gads Hill Place, Higham by Rochester, Kent are dated the 8th of June, and, on the same Thursday, after a long spell of writing in the Chalet where he habitually wrote, he collapsed suddenly at dinner.
He died at 6-jo P.M. on Friday, the 9th of June, and was buried privately in Poets Corner, Westminster Abbey, in the early morning of the I4th of June.
It is already beginning to undergo a process of automatic sifting, segregation and crystallization, at the conclusion of which it will probably occupy a larger segment in the literary consciousness of the English-spoken race than ever before.

The earliest recorded example in Higham occurred during the religious and political turmoil of the early 17th century in the lead up to the Civil War after which the Puritans held sway.
The coming of Methodism to Higham derives from the 18th century revival led by Rev. John Wesley (1703-1791) and his hymn writing brother Charles, both remaining Anglicans till death.
Partly in view of the increasing population of Higham, in the 1950s, a door to door inquiry was made to ascertain whether a Methodist Church would be welcome.

Our allotments are of historic significance, as they were provided as part of the 1850 Walthamstow enclosure award as allotments or field gardens for the labouring poor, to compensate for the loss to the parish in general rights of pasture on Higham Hill Common.
The original plots at Higham Hill were a quarter of an acre; they have been subdivided, but the access paths are still as originally laid out.
In August 2002 we celebrated our 150th anniversary of Higham Hill Common Allotments in appropriate style, and the work we are doing has been featured locally, and nationally.
