The main rules and requirements for the award of the HSC are set out in a booklet entitled Rules and Procedures for 2005 Higher School Certificate Candidates, which is published on the Board's website each year.
To qualify for the Higher School Certificate students must satisfactorily complete a Preliminary pattern of study comprising at least 12 units and an HSC pattern of study comprising at least 10 units.
The school assessment marks for each course will be moderated by the Board according to the performance of the students in your school in the HSC examination for that course.

Higher School Certificate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Higher School Certificate, or HSC, is the credential awarded to secondary school students who successfully complete senior high school level studies (years 11 and 12 or equivalent) in New South Wales, Australia.
Individual schools may require their students to undertake certain courses, as is the case with Studies of Religion in many religious schools or Agriculture in agricultural schools, however these are internal school requirements separate from HSC requirements.
A student's final mark in each subject is determined by a combination of in-school assessments conducted throughout the HSC component of a course, and externally-administered final exam(s) typically held in October or November of that year.

STRESS AND LEARNING IN THE HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE
Completion of the New South Wales Higher School Certificate is generally perceived as a stressful undertaking but there has been little research devoted to the nature of the stress responses experienced by students, or to its relationship with students' goals, academic self-efficacy or performance.
Completion of the Certificate represents the end of a significant chapter in school students' lives and the results are used by students to gain entry to courses at technical and tertiary level.
In the context of the HSC the orientations that students adopt towards the achievement of their goals may have an effect on, and be affected by, the level of stress response.

Certificate programs that consist of for-credit courses, and whose credits carry over to degree programs, are the subject of enormous growth in higher education.
Certificate programs play an important role for the graduate student in permitting a "modular" path to graduate study that may seem less intimidating to the entering student.
There is also some information now that indicates that the opportunity to enroll in a certificate program before continuing on to a graduate degree makes graduate education more accessible to older students who have been away from higher education, or students from traditionally underrepresented groups in graduate school.

Reflections on Higher School Certificate examinations
Every year, the HSC examiners (markers) publish a detailed report on the performances of students in the previous year’s exams.
Another valuable guide is ‘Ten common mistakes made by HSC Maths students,’ published in Reflections 20(4), 1995 and based on a decade of examiners’ reports.
Often when solving a mathematical problem, HSC students don’t stop to think and consider the range of strategies and tools available to them, instead launching into some routine or formula which they have identified to ‘match’ with the problem.

School certificate scrapped | The Daily Telegraph
THE School Certificate is to be scrapped in its present form, along with a raft of other tests – including basic skills – under sweeping changes to the exam system.
Along with the School Certificate, it is expected the basic skills test for years 3 and 5 students will be dropped, as well as the English language and literacy assessment and the secondary numeracy assessment program for years 7 and 8.
NSW's world-class Higher School Certificate is not immediately threatened by the changes but a federal push for an Australia-wide curriculum and a national certificate of education could undermine the HSC in the longer term.
