As the Highland Land League it was consciously modelled on the Irish Land League.
The Land League was associated also however with direct-action protest tactics and the use of these tactics was to reappear in the early 20th century.

Fraserburgh F.C. Highland league champions in 2001/02 (their first title since1938), Fraserburgh have one of the biggest fan bases in the league.
Admitted to the Highland League for the 1994/95 season (after 3 Inverness Caley and Thistle plus Ross County departed for the SFL) the club have yet to fare better in the league than 10th position.

Some Highland League sides might not fancy going through the pyramid - when Fraserburgh won the Highland League the year Airdrie went bust there was an opening in the SFL, their board declined to pursue the opening sayign they would rather win the HL nine times in a row than play in teh 3rd division.
In the conference leagues, redistribution would also occur in the those that contested promotion to D1B in the event that the relegated team from D1B is not from the same region as the club going in the opposite direction (ie SoS champs win play-off, but team coming down would ordinarily go into the WoS league).
The two leagues contesting the D1A promotion slot is more difficult to work, as obviously the HL teams are nowhere near any of the other leagues.
