Highlander (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to the film, Connor MacLeod was born in the year 1518 "in the village of Glenfinnan on the shores of Loch Shiel" (historically this village is better known as the rally point where Bonnie Prince Charlie's troops first concentrated on August 19, 1745 See:Glenfinnan).
A number of other references in the film connected him to historical figures and events, namely an 18th century duel on Boston Common (in which a drunken MacLeod was repeatedly run through by a sword, to no effect, by an insulted husband) and killing a Nazi officer during World War II.
It remains arguably the best-known film of the Highlander series, and the one better-received by the public.

 Highlander: Endgame
In Highlander: Endgame, Connor MacLeod (all together now: "of the clan MacLeod") is a tired, bitter specter of his former self.
And just for kicks, let's use the second film to establish the fact that the immortals are actually extra-terrestrials.
The film was grainy, but not too grainy as to conceal the cheap sets and obvious backdrops (was it that hard to find a grassy hill, guys?).Everybody's makeup looked as if it were applied with a trowel, especially Lambert.

Highlander (1986)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Highlander is an ingenious and very entertaining science fiction film which has come in for rather a lot of (unwarranted) scathing criticism.
The word "confusing" has been used to describe the film quite often as well, but if you stick with it the confusing moments are explained quite cleverly towards the closing reels.
The film's intentionally muddled structure is slightly irritating on the first viewing, but with repeated viewings it becomes more comprehensible, even clever.

 Movie-List - Reviews - Highlander: Endgame
Immortality films have to play with the same rules as "time travel" films in that they have to chronologically map out the immortal's life and strategically pull off each time period.
As for Lambert, he is bored throughout the majority of the film and it's a shame.
This action film is only recommended for the fans of the TV Series because I do believe any outsiders to the series will be utterly lost.

 Highlander 2 Special Edition (DVD)
Highlander, the 1986 Christopher Lambert career-launcher, was an entertaining, yet uneven film.
That Highlander became a franchise at all is even more amazing considering its very first sequel: Highlander 2: The Quickening, originally released in 1991 and reworked (with improved special effects) for a new "Special Edition" DVD.
Highlander 2: The Quickening is worth watching, but mostly to gawk at the sheer audacious badness of it.

"Highlander: Endgame" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
ad the original Highlander film had remained untouched by sequels or spin-offs, there is no question that it would still be regarded as one of the most influential films of the sci-fi genre.
This is a film made at the end of the film's successful franchise, capping a universe that has lasted for over ten years.
It unites the Highlander of the films, Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) and the Highlander from the TV show, Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul) for the first film since the first episode of the series (Quentin MacLeod, from the cartoon show, is missing however).

HIGHLANDER TV SERIES - SEASON ONE DVD
The first Highlander film in 1986 starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery (and directed by once-promising Aussie director Russell Mulcahy) has become a solid cult classic and for good reason--it's awful in a way that a small group of dedicated enthusiasts love to defend without, perhaps, a complete understanding of the attraction.
Lovable for its wide-eyed ambition, this is the first of the "Highlander" episodes so far to engage me on a level beyond the watch-checking, reminding a good deal of the late lamented schlock genre time travel series "Voyagers".
The level of woman fear in "Highlander" is so high (Tess is tranquilized in order to remove any threat to penile-burdened members of the audience) that it serves to bolster the case that this series and premise is the most interesting example of sublimated homosexuality in mainstream "straight" culture.

Similarly, Highlander was released before the music video style became commonplace in feature films and before Christopher Lambert (who portrayed title character Conor MacLeod) became a joke in the United States.
Highlander's success eventually made a sequel inevitable, but the creators had to struggle with a problem: the conclusion of Highlander precluded the possibility of continuing the story.
Highlander the Series was simply pedestrian one-hour confrontations pitting Duncan MacLeod against one overacting nefarious Immortal after another, each a pale imitation of Clancy Brown's delicious overarching villainy in the first film.

More successfully, "Highlander: The Animated Series" (1994-5) found yet another MacLeod, this time a young boy named Quentin (voiced by Miklos Perlus) living in a post-Apocalyptic world where the immortals have sworn against fighting one another in order to battle the evil Kortan.

The restored cut of the film is no doubt a much more satisfying presentation than the theatrical cut, but it too suffers from choppy editing and a meandering narrative.

Highlander is one of those very few films that manages to repeat that trick.
It was followed by the bizarrely misconceived Highlander II: The Quickening, which contradicts much of the first film and explains the immortals as space aliens.
Next came, Highlander III: The Final Dimension, which ignored all events in the second film, Highlander, a television series that ignored the end of the first film and had its own spin-off TV shows, and Highlander: Endgame, which attempted to join the films and TV series.
