  Welcome to the Monongahela National Forest in Elkins, WV.
The Highway traverses the mountainous terrain of the Allegheny Highlands and Plateau, and rises from Richwood, elevation 2,325 feet, to over 4,500 feet along the Parkway.
Speed limits are 55 mph for the State Route 39/55 section and 45 mph for the Parkway section.
The Parkway is not maintained for winter travel, and is normally closed from early December to March.

According to the authority, fuel and supplies bound for the Highlands provinces were held up in Goroka, while coffee and tea bound for international destinations missed their ships docked in Lae, as the trucks were held up in Mt Hagen for a week.
Speaking from Goroka, Mr Lacey said since the highway was cut off at Barawagi seven day ago, trucking firms have pulled their trucks off the road and were waiting for the relevant authorities to repair the damaged sections of the highway and deal with the landowner issues.
An attempt by a contractor to repair the damaged section of the road was stopped by the nearly Siglku and Kamaneku clans, who were demanding compensation from the government for ignoring their earlier plea to the local authorities to fix the road.
