The King's Highway 404 or simply Highway 404 is an Ontario 400-Series Highway that runs from the junction of Highway 401 and the Don Valley Parkway in Toronto to its northern terminus at Green Lane/Herald Road in Newmarket.
Originally an extension of the Don Valley Parkway and incorporating the routing of Woodbine Avenue, Highway 404 became a provincial highway (and was completed by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation) in 1977.
North of Highway 407, Highway 404 was widened to 6 lanes all the way to Aurora Road, and the lighting system had been extended all the way to Major Mackenzie Drive.

MTO completed construction of the widening of Highway 404 between Highway 401 and Highway 7 from six to eight lanes in 1998, at a cost of $20.2 million.
A Highway 404 widening project between Major MacKenzie Drive and Aurora Road started in the summer of 2001, and was opened to traffic in December 2001.
The ministry is preparing a cost-sharing agreement with York Region for the north ramps at the 16th Avenue interchange.

The Minister of the Environment with Cabinet's concurrence approved the Ministry of Transportation's (MTO) Highway 404 Extension Environmental Assessment (EA).
This EA approval will allow the MTO to proceed to the design and construction stage for a new 45 km four-lane extension to Highway 404 with controlled access extending northerly from Davis Drive to Durham Rd. 23, and a 9 km transition section between Durham Rd. 23 and Highway 12.
It is anticipated that the highway will be constructed in stages over a number of years, to reflect financial constraints and traffic demands.

Now that Franklin Mountain State Park wants to build a trail to meet up with the Sierra Vista trail at Hwy 404, I have been looking into the problem of crossing 404.
After talking with the NM State Highway and Transportation Department, it looks like there won't be any reconstruction work done on 404 in the near future, but some might be done in the next 5 years.
Our best bet is to keep an eye out for the early public input meetings.
