Ontario provincial highway 401, which is normally referred to simply as Highway 401, is a freeway that extends across Southern Ontario, Canada.
Today the stretch of Highway 401 that passes through the Greater Toronto Area ranges from 6 to 18 lanes, and the stretch between Highway 403 and Brock Road in Pickering is thought to be the world's longest continuous stretch of highway having 10 or more lanes.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: State of New York
It is bounded by Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River, and the Dominion of Canada on the north; by Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut on the east; by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the Atlantic Ocean on the south, and by Pennsylvania, Lake Erie, and the Niagara River on the west.
It is based upon subventions of highway improvements by means of loans and aids from the State treasury to the various local authorities.
The improved system of State highways, begun in late years, has given modern highways to many of the rural districts and laid out avenues between the cities.

Hwy 2 was the original trans-provincial highway in Ontario, made up of a number of historical military roads including Dundas Street, the Longwoods Road, and the Kingston Road.
Highway 4 continues northbound concurrently with Highway 2 from this junction, and Highway 4 southbound is accessed by turning right here.
When it was part of Highway 2, Dundas Street was four lanes through Downtown London, but it was narrowed to its present-day two lanes by the city in 1970.

 407 ETR - Enpsychlopedia
Highway 407 was the eighth 400-Series Highway planned for Ontario, to serve as a bypass of Highway 401 through Toronto and to serve as a major east-west corridor across the sprawling suburbs to the north of the city.
Highway 407 is regarded as a bypass of Highway 401, the main trunk route though Southern Ontario and the world's busiest highway with well over 500,000 average daily trips on a section between Highway 427 and Highway 404.
In addition, cross-street overpasses and ramps for the interchange connections to Highway 427 and Highway 400, and modifications to accommodate the highway at the Highway 403/QEW interchange, were constructed by the Ministry of Transportation in the early 1990s.

Major freeway junctions are located at Highway 420, Highway 405, Highway 406, Highway 403 in Burlington, Highway 407, Highway 403 in Oakville and Highway 427.
Because the highway curves sharply around the end of Lake Ontario, its directions are not signed with compass points as usual in Canada, but with destination cities, such as ''QEW Toronto''.
The QEW is one of Ontario's busier highways with over 200,000 average trips per day.

History of Ontario's Kings Highways - Introduction to Ontario Highways
The 407, 410, 416, 417, 420 and 427 all adopted their numbers from another highway that was bypassed by the 400-series route.
For example, most of the highways in the 50s lie between Brantford and the Niagara Peninsula, and most of the highways in the 80s are in Southwestern Ontario.
In 1997, Hwy 7094 was changed to a posted highway route number (Hwy 24).

Ontario Provincial Highways (400-427 + QEW)
In this era of highway downloading which has seen all of the Gardiner Expwy (Former Hwy 2) and a part of the QEW given over to the City of Toronto, it seems that the Don Valley will remain in city hands and Hwy 404 will most definitely not be extended southward.
The gradual lengthening of Hwy 417 is scheduled to continue for the next several years, as the MTO upgrades the eastern end of Hwy 17 to a fully-controlled access freeway and gives the newly upgraded sections the Hwy 417 designation.
The QEW was designed partially as a four-lane divided highway with a three to ten foot median strip, with the remaining less-travelled stretches as undivided highway.
