Highway of Death - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Highway of Death refers to a road between Kuwait and Basra on which the retreating Iraqi army was attacked by American aircraft during the Gulf War, on the night of February 26/27, 1991.
Western news reports refer to the road as Highway 80, and it runs from Kuwait City to the border towns of Abdali (Kuwait) and Safwan (Iraq), and then on to Basra.
The bombings were cited by some observers as a war crime — the deliberate bombing of a stretch of highway where fleeing and "out of combat" Iraqi soldiers were stuck in a frenzied traffic jam.

frontline: the gulf war: appendix: trainor on the iraqi death toll
What concerned him now was the political fall out from what was perceived as us beating to death the Iraqis who were innocently trying to escape the guns--the so-called highway of death where television pictures and news pictures showed this long line of destroyed vehicles and presumably a lot of dead Iraqis soldiers in there.
Most of what existed on the so-called highway of death were stolen goods and stolen vehicles from Kuwait city.
Most of them when the bombing started were smart enough to jump out of their stolen vehicles and run into the safety of the desert so the highway of death was the highway of death for vehicles, washing machines and stolen television sets, but it really wasn't the highway of death for Iraqi solders.

PHELAN — The intersection of Deep Creek Road and Highway 138, known to some as the "highway of death," is scheduled for changes that should put an end to its accumulating body count.
Adams said the six or seven deaths in the past year have mostly been caused by driver error rather than poor road conditions or design.
Postmus added that another project is in the works that would widen Highway 138 from two lanes to four lanes from interstate 15 to the border of Los Angeles County.
